Alternator Amperage and testing

How do you tell what amperage you alternator is? and second, how do you know if it is good without fitting it?

If it is a bosch it is stamped in the coding on the aluminium ends, as to testing unless you can access a test bench (auto elect) i would say you would have to fit it to see.
