fuel gauge

G'day all,
              Getting the roadworthy items fixed yesterday and needed fuel as i had only put ten dollars in a cuppla months ago so the fuel gauge was reading empty so i drove her down to the servo and put $20 of juice in and the fuel gauge still did not register anything ( it does move a bit when the ignition is turned on), how do i go about fixing this problem ? anyone got any ideas, is it electrical ,mechanical?

Check all your connections and grounds first.
If all that's sorted, there's a good chance its the sender with problems.

Another option, before pulling bits of the tank apart is to get a known good fuel gauge and plug it in to see if that works.
Your gauge may be busted.

If you earth out the connection on the top of the fuel tank sender unit the gauge should read full, this is a quick test of wiring and the gauge itself without having to dismantle anything drastic.
If the gauge does not move could be bad wiring or the gauge itself, if it moves could be a bad earth on the fuel tank to body or the sender unit (float may have sunk)

       My 18 year old son has just moved up here from vic and he tells me fuel is around $1.20 a litre so may-be its just that your not putting enough in.hehe .
How did everthing else go with rego are you on the road yet?

Not yet Sarge get the roady tomorrow and hopefully rego on wed if i have enough moolah that is, rego is 533 plus 8 dollars in evey 200 of market value for stamp duty
