Looking to replace (at least the lower seal) on my 1957 FE anyone have a parts list with the part number please . I could wait till the old one is off to get it ,but if someone can supply the no that would be great . Cheers , John .

Originally it was not a seal, it was just packing



I think Rare Spares sells the seal that they use in their kit separately

John,

I reco'd the steering column in my Humpy earlier this year, and bought a Rare Spares kit.  Didn't end up using any of the bits in the Rares kit for various reasons . . .

The seal I have is marked 108204 and helpfully has metric dimensions on it: 25.4 (1") I.D., 36.53 (1-7/16") O.D., 6.35 (1/4") deep.

I can whack it in an envelope and mail it to you, if you want.

I chose not to use the replacement seal, because the packing I rescued from an FJ steering box was rubber, nearly 1/4" deep, and still pliable.  I figured that it'd seal better on a slightly marked sector shaft than a lip seal, which only contacts the shaft in a line.  The original FJ seal and retainer worked.  My steering box has not leaked at all since.

But that's mainly because I replaced the sector shaft bushes.  They were worn out, and the steering box leaked grease faster than I could keep up with it.  The Pitman arm was covered in grease.

Replacing the sector shaft oil seal is a bit of an operation.  I reckon it's much easier in the medium term to keep topping your steering box up with gear oil.
