Santa (well my wife actually) came up with a beaut little record of the use of an FE sedan in the 1960's.  The owner of what is entered on the "Vital Information" page as a 1957 Holden sedan has recorded the mileage travelled every day from 13 May 1964 to 24 October 1965.  The front cover has "IV" written on it, which suggests that it is book 4 of records of this type.  There is a trip from Canberra to Melbourne and around Victoria undertaken from 2 January 1965.

He has calculated his petrol usage at 28m.p.g. at one point.  He spent 13 pounds, 10 shillings and 4 pence for 63 gallons for the Victoria trip.

Here are the images of some of the pages and entries.

Going by the petrol bought on 21.5.1969.

8 (Imp) gallons = 36 Litres.  And £1/10/02 = $3.02

302 cents divided by 36 litres = 8.3 cents per litre.

When I first began driving (1964) I bought discounted petrol at a mates Hire Machinery place for 3/- a gallon.  That worked out around 6.6 cents a litre.

Bring back the good old days!!!!!   Grin   Grin   Grin

When petrol was the cheapest part of running a car …...

With a Red Hill address & the friend in Manuks the log book may have belonged to a professional (Dr, Accountant) who moved to Australia.
But, he may have also been in the construction industry like many of the Europeans who worked on our large scale projects in the 50s & 60s. I have met a few of these men over the years & they are the most interesting people to talk to. What they physically endured to accomplish what we see & use today was quite amazing. Many moved from the Snowy Hydro project to Canberra in the days when the city & the lake were under construction.
