All I can say is it must be a rating like a hotel lol. May be they are like the ones the brown nose teachers pets got back in school.

I have 4 **** and soon maybe another. I wander if you can loose one for being bad.

On a serious note I believe they are used as a reference as to how often you use the forum and how many posts you have made. It is a status thing.

Jim is correct.  The number of stars is directly related to your status, ie Newbie, Junior Member, Guru etc.  People with admin privileges automatically get 5 blue stripey stars.
