How did you signal going left then??

Hand outside and then point to left over the roof.  Some of the older drivers in our vintage car club still do it that way.  I only use the stop and right hand signals in my vintage.

I thought signalling left was the same as stop?

At least that was what I was told, I'm not old enough to have lived it.

the only signals I usually see now are the "I'm not happy" signal.

That is/was the rule for NSW: The arm-out, hand facing up is the signal for both "Stop" or "Slowing (to turn left)". Maybe the signals were different in other states? Dunno.

What you may not remember is the NSW "give way to the vehicle on your right rule".

This meant that if there was a car coming out of a side street on your right you had to give way to it , no matter what Can you imagine dealing with that on the Hume Highway today

I learned to drive just as this was changed, I can't tell you how stessful it was. Thankfully we followed the Canberra (UK) example of "major and minor roads" hence the Give Way signs we see today
