Is it possible to rebuild steering columns to get rid of free-play, or is there an adjustment that actually works?
As I am not planning to fit a V8 to my cars I can't justify the expense or hassle of an R&P conversion, but of course I want the car to steer properly.
The rest of the steering gear is either new or refurbed and has no play.
I followed the manual's guide to adjusting the steering but still have some freeplay in the steering wheel  Sad

When you say "the rest of the steering gear" Do you mean that the worm and race have been renewed?
If they are worn in the centre, no amount of adjusting will get it to work properly.
You would need a rebuild kit.

By the rest of the steering gear I mean tie-rod ends and the steering connections, the column itself hasn't been touched yet. Are the kits available from Rares? The ones on the website look a little "light".

The Rares kit as you say, is a little light on although it may be all you need

I have heard that if you get the rebuilt steering box they will fit a new sector shaft if required, but I don't think they sell it separately

What happens if the "worm and race" need a refurb?

Basically the gears get worn and need replacing - I have a new set of rares sector shaft and worm gears ready to bolt into a steering box if needed. It is not usually supplied as a separate unit but I got a set as part of a deal so to speak. Roll Eyes

I want $60 plus freight - it is too long for Australia Post.
