Looks like the carby on the FC is going to need a kit put through it. Is there any mods that I can do or get done while pulled apart. I have heard of putting a 186 top section onto my base, is there any other old tricks out there?

Dean,

There is a lot of tricks that you can do to the old stromberg, they start from adjustable jets to methanol conversions.

If you want to go to the trouble of taking the manifold off, or better if you have a spare, you can cut the studs off in the manifold and retap the threads to suit the larger base. Then you grind out the centre of the manifold to match the larger diameter of the carb base. If you wanted to go further still you would then split the manifold lengthwise across the flanges and grind out the centre of the manifold. You then furnace braze the manifold back together. When I raced in production class years ago, we had to have a stromberg Carb, Holden Manifold and Holden Head and Cylinder block. We used to put the 1" 9/32 venture carburettor of a 250 Cubic inch F*#d motor, and do the above mentioned modification.

The Stromberg Venturi sizes start at 1" 1/32 (Grey) 1" 3/32 (149 and 161) 1"5/32 (173,179 and 186) 1" 7/32 (202)

If you just want to go a little larger, then you could get or make up a small spacer and use offset studs. the offset studs have enough of a kink in them to allow them to fit the larger diameter base and the space allows the carb to bolt up to them. You still have to ensure that the throat of the manifold matches the base of the carburettor.

This is the better way to go rather than just changing the middle section of the carburettor.

Of course all the above is dependant on what modifications  have been done to your engine.

Hi Keith,

I ended up getting an adaptor plate made up & fitted a 186 carby onto my manifold. The motor is stock bar a set of extractors but it did seem to perform a little on hills on the way to Orange. So I would recommend this mod as a cheap way of helping a stocky breathe a bit easier.

Hey Pedro, in the process of doing that. As usual I left everything to the last minute so I thought the 186 thing would be less mucking about. I was going to put it on when I did the extractors on but didn't have everthing there to go so thought "I'll do that later" & of course later came around sooner Wink.

It won't happen overnight but it will happen Grin.

I've actually got the linkages here for a set of twin carbs that Smithy sent me as part of a trade a while ago, I won't be needing them anymore so I'll swap you for that brake pedal you're sending up Wink

I with Pedro on this one,  go the twin carb setup, if the car has a stock cam, fit a pair of the 1 and 1/16th venturi's and try it from there. You will probably have to get some smaller jets or fit adjustable main jets to get it running right.

You could go the 1 and 3/16th venturi's but you will be coming close to over carburating you engine. If you then fit a wilder cam, do head work etc you wil be able to do much, much more
