I'll get to it just as soon as I can. It's not like I haven't got anything else to do, you know.  Roll Eyes

OK, I've installed a chat plug in, otherwise and with apologies to JO'K, known as a "Shout-Box".

it appears by default in the personalised box at the top of the page, and you can toggle between showing/hiding with the plus/minus icon in the far right (next to the current date).

It's not available to Guests, but open to all registered users. It might give the "Chat" concept a new lease on life (it never seemed to get a lot of use on the old forum, although it was popular amongst a few).

I'm interested in feedback, hence the poll.

cheers

There are other alternatives available, I will probably remove this one and try them over the next little while.

The chat has been turned off, at least for today. I'm trying to ascertain if it was responsible for the huge jump in bandwidth we've experienced over the last two days. It does seem more than coincidental...

Sorry for any inconvenience.

It definitely looks like the shout-box addition was responsible for the jump in bandwidth earlier this week. The statistics from our host are very interesting - it's staggering the improvement since switching from YaBB to SMF.

I expected to see a big jump yesterday after the flooding from inktomi (hot-bot search engine), but thankfully it didn't happen.

I'm looking at some chat software that works more like the semi-detached version we had on the old forum, more news as it comes to hand...

OK, I've installed a new bit of chat software.  It should log you in directly from this forum, but if not, the username and password are the same.

Give it a whirl and comment here.

It looks like there's a minor bug in the integration with SMF, where the displayed username is your login name, not the name as displayed here (ie for me it was "ret" instead of "RET".)

You can change this by going to the "User CP" (control panel) and providing a display name. You should only need to do this once.

cheers

He later became General Superindent of Experimental engineering, and I thought I might be able to contact some old workmates through this site.
But I couldn,t understand how to do it.......not very good on copmputer, and Bill could build cars but cant even turn computer on
