I have an EK with standard drum brakes and i want to put in a Booster. One brake place said use a VH40 but then when i phoned another place they said that the VH40 would be to savage for my Drum brake system and that i should go for a VH44, can the forum give me some guidance on this
Thanks Mick

Hi Kermit.

The 2nd brake place was correct.

The VH44 is the booster to use for drum-braked cars. The VH40 is the PBR booster that GM-H used for HR front disc-braked cars.

Kermit,

Welcome back Grin

Apologies in advance if this is obvious knowledge, but a booster will only reduce the pedal pressure.  It will not increase braking capacity at all.

My opinion, FWIW is that boosted drums are worse than unboosted, unless you're on a waiting list for hip replacement surgery or something.  The only thing boosted drums gives you is a faster lock-up.

cheers

Do you want "better" braking or "easier" braking?

For better braking, some sort of upgrade, probably discs is required.

For easier braking, fit up a remote booster, I have one on the wagon and the braking isn't too sensitive. Not sure what booster I have though.

Thanks all
But now i am totally confused at the moment the brakes seem to be either on or off and of course when i jump in my late model car the pedal is user friendly in other words you can squeese / feel it more so than on or off it so i would like something with more feel but not going to the cost and trouble of Disc brakes Help Help !!!

If you are locking up your unboosted drum brakes, a booster will only make the problem worse.

I'm with Stinky, sounds like your wheel cylinders could do with some attention.  Unboosted drum brakes in good order have a nice amount of feel, but please don't drive your car like a modern car, you need a little more braking room and no hasty, last minute, jump-on-the-brake type excursions
