A quick question for Vics out there. I have a set of old black and white plate that were on my FE when I purchased it many years ago unregistered. I got it registered in the green plates and always wanted to put the black ones on. Can this be done without the expense of ordering new custom plates.

Cheers

No - the old plates are no longer valid.  The only way to re use the numbers is to buy them as a custom plate.   You used to be able to bring in your old plates and reregister a vehicle with that number but that has been done away with now.
