Rob was the car in the wrecking yard a 2 tone car?

I'm trying to get my head around possible answers to this question, but all still seem implausible.

The single colour car theory leading to a mistake can't work since the wrong bootlid would have been fitted before the car was painted, so whether the car was to end up as a 2 tone or single tone would be immaterial.
GMH was very proud of its new model FE and to think that they would let cars go that were wrong or inferior seems to defy logic.

However GMH did build specials as the following shows

I have photos of 3 FE standard sedans with special front guard stripes and the script badge on the rear quarter.
One is a genuine one owner car still rusting away in the owners yard.

This car has body # FE 215 3771 M
and there is another car just like it with body # FE 215 3756 M

They are just 15 cars away from each other.

This leads me to conclude that they came down the line in a batch run.  Although no documentation exists that I have seen of these cars ever existing officially.
Hence the possibility of FE 225's being produced without the "HOLDEN'' & 'SPECIAL" badges - what I fail to see is why they would downgrade a model rather than enhance it

The only thing that I can add is that pehaps there was a shortage of 'special' boots, and they chose to place 'standard' boots on rather than hold up production.
Hey Ken, check out the roadrattler looks like it may have been 1 of those specials. I have an article somewhere when it was still just black. I will try to find it.

Hi Guys.
The car is a single tone "Greyish" type colour. I sent you the details ages back, Ken. I will try & get down there to check it out, even though the fella who owns the wreckers sh&%s me to tears with his attitude. Got to listen to his life story & why the govt have got it all wrong everytime you go down. Hobart people will know him Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
I love the black standard with the special bits. That would be a cool car.
Maybe Alex's theory could be correct.

I understand the workflow, and agree with your point about the colour(s) being immaterial.  I just think the missing trim might not stand out as much on a single-tone car.

Those vehicles with the commercial guard trim where the special badge should go are very interesting.

[box]Craig,
Sorry, you started a simple thread of photos of your Grandpa's FE, and it's been well and truly hijacked.[/box]

Hi Guys.
First up, Craig, sorry for being one of the hi-jackers!!

Right, I have found another FE with an odd set up. It is a Business Sedan (Ken, you know of this car) & when checking it out today, I realised it too had the "Special" trim on the front guards & doors, but instead of the "Holden" script on the quarters, this one had "Special" Shocked
The complete history of the car is known & the original owners daughter (Now getting on), clearly remembers picking up the car from the Launceston Holden dealers with this trim fitted. It was a car on the showroom floor.
It is a factory Black, with the red seats & has Silver dash & centre pillars. Also, some silver on the doors.

This car also has the taxi bar fitted from new, with the captured nuts in the centre pillar. Also, the little light switch on the drivers side pillar.
This car is in a state of restoration & although I am very keen to purchase, I am dead meat if I do.

I will put an advert in the "For Sale" section soon, once I have some photos & more info.

Regards,
Rob J

ken,
good pic of the black FE.  Did you happen to get a good pic of the green windowless van under the car port on the other side of the house???  i have been trying since 1988 to buy it and they wont sell.  i think it will be pretty far gone now.
