Hi Guys,

I'm a pom coming over to Oz in the new year for good!!!
I've got a VW Kombi here and was looking to get one when I arrive. That was until I visited some Oz Classic Car sites and fell in love with the Holden FC / FE!!!!

Could you help me out with a few things?

1, What's a good price for an almost immaculate example? (im not into resto ... not technical enough!)

2, Where's best to look? specialist trade, private web? papers? magazines?

3, Is there much of a Holden scene in Newcastle? That's where I'm a headin...

A funny way to get into a new car... but I can see why you all love them so much.

hope you can help

heres a link to the newcastle club site, I dont think they use the internet up there but.

http://www.48-78holdencarclub.net

good choice, those kombis aren't real good down here, they roll to easy when you are trying to dodge the kangaroo's.
the scene in newcastle wasn't to bad, I know becuase I lived there for seven years, parts were very easy to get when I was living at mayfeild, belmont and toronto (usually walking distance but when I lived at wallsend.there was usually a extra 10 minutes drive.
there are frequent runs and cruises in the area to keep you busy and meet other car people.
on a Sunday the nobbys beach area becomes a "strictly cruzing" area with every man and his dog out cruising in all styles of cars.
by the way I spent the 7 years I lived there driving a FC holden and couldnt think of a better car to do it in.

a runner on the road starts at about $3500
a good one is about $6000 and a smick one is around $10000 + and if you look after it you should get your money back.
look for rust in the subframe ( under the front of the car) and in the bottom front corners of the floor, also check the rails under the car but dont stress about them to much as they are easily repairable if you have a welder.

Welcome to the land of Oz when you get here, Paul.  And good luck for your search for a good FE/FC.  I'm glad you see the "character" in the models.  When you buy one you'll be amazed at the attention they attract, and the fact hat everybody seems to have an FE or FC story to tell.

Keep you eye on the Cars for Sale board http://www.fefcholden.org.au/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=c4sale.  Some gems come up on there from time to time , so don't rush in.  Wait and you'll get what you want for $7K to $10K.  You';ve just missed a good one (Fast Eddie's), but others will come up.

Best wishes,

Martin.
