roadworthy queries

we have just sold our fb

i know its a little off topic but it would be the same if it was fc

we went to get the roady, and it failed. we had to do the timeing cover seal and harmonic balancer seal.

it passed a roadworthy and then the guy came and picked the car up.

now he is ringing us and complaing that there is oil coming out of the harmonic balancer seal

we dont think that this is our problem because we done what was required for roadworthy and when he came and picked the car up it was not leaking.

could anyone possibly help with this

Well it wasn't leaking on pickup of the car was it??  The roadworthy would clearly state that it was a problem, and that problem was rectified, so really after you exchanged money and papers the car was his and so is that problem.  They'll try anything on sometimes, but really it isn't your responsibility!!  After all you don't know how he drove it after he got around the corner, he may have flogged the ring out of it springing a leak nearby!!  I wouldn't be too worried, I'm sure he'll go away eventually....maybe!!

Torque, I agree that technically it is not your problem since the seal was replaced.  However I told you at the time that if you replaced the seal without getting a reco balancer, that it would soon leak again.
You have saved a few bucks by not putting on the reco balancer (about $25 I think) and made an enemy out of your buyer and got aggro to boot.

Was it worth it?

Moral of the story - always put a reco balancer in when you change the seal.

Hi Torque
    A good thing to keep in mind when selling a car  is " How would I feel if I was buying if I this car"     If you are selling a car it is not worth putting "roughy" parts on it , unless you want the guy coming back.  A few $$ extra is really worth it "to get a good name" .  If the purchaser says "Hey , this was a good buy" , he'll tell his friends . A good name is earned , but  a bad name goes around very quickly. But this could be one of the few who like to whinge at anything.
   I know once the deal is done , it's the buyers problem, but a happy buyer could be a return buyer.  As Ken said , $25 isn't much to know that there was good a part on the car when sold .
      All part of the "learning curve"
