I'm looking at buying an FC with a grey motor. Took it for a run last night after jump starting it. Problem is that is isn't holding charge. Also, the generator is making an odd sound so i'm thinking that a bearing in the generator has given up causing the slight vibration, noise and no charge (the lights go and and it just dies after 5 minutes or so). My actual question is - can i use an alternator from a red motor 6? I think they have a screw that can adjust the level of charge which could be changed accordingly. Does the generator sound like a reasonable diagnosis for the symptoms? I'm not concerned about making up brackets to get it to fit

You certainly can.  Easier to use one with inbuilt reg, but you can use the reg on the firewall model if you like.
Just rewire the generator regulator out of the loop.
