The Parkes Radio Telescope was officially opened by the Governor-General on October 31, 1961.
Here is a picture taken in late 1959 when it was a big hole in the middle of a sheep paddock.



Note vehicle in background.  And water bags too.

What a fantastic picture of construction in the late 50's. A pegged out circle and a team of trench diggers. And of course a beautiful FE hiding behind the mixer. Thanks for sharing.
