I recently bought a spedo off Slim as my one in FEE started playing up a little on the way to the garage to get a pink slip recently It got stuck on 20MPH.
I also had a spare one I picked up at a swap meet. when I opened it up it was a bit clocked up with old oil and dust. I noticed the outer case had a number on it 7229318-J58 then I looked at the one I got off Slim and it had stamped on it 7229318-e57 then I looked at my one in FEE and it had 7229318-L56. Can anyone tell me if the last two digits represents the year and what does the letter stand for and the rest of the numbers.

Well, I don't know with any certainty, but my guess is:
The 7229318 is the part number for the speedo.
The last 3 digits may represent the month and year of manufacture. The 56, 57, 58 would be the year, and the letter preceeding them would be the month, with January the first month represented by A and December the last month being represented by L.
So based on this assumption, your speedos would be manufactured in:
Oct 58
Apr 57
Dec 56
Anyone know for certain?

The 7229318 is the part number for the speedo.

Alex is right 7229318 is the part number for an FE FC speedo head assembly, the parts book does not mention the rest but Alex's story sounds very feasible.

This solves my little problem regarding the year in which

the car was manufactured, the speedo being an

important instrument that records, not just the miles

the car has travelled, also  the year it was assembled.

Hey Leon.
Armed with this little piece of info would allow you to make some assumptions re date of manufacture of a car.....but, you would need to know details of production of speedos to be sure. Did the speedo get placed directly into a car as it was made, or did it sit on the part shelf waiting it's turn for a few weeks/months. It would certainly establish that a car was not made before the date.....if it is infact a date? Is it the original speedo, and can you be certain it is.

Hi Leon,

Just had a look at my speedo and it has K57 on the back so made in Nov 57.  After talking to Ken when I first got my car, the manufacture was between Mar 5 and Mar 15 in 1958, so still not quite the most accurate way to get the true date of manufacture.

I guess it's an accurate way of determining the manufacture date of the speedo, that's all.  Presumably this was done to allow for recall if a batch was found to be faulty in some way.

Original glass has dots above and below the "ARMOURPLATE" and "SAFETY GLASS" lettering that identifies the year and quarter in which the glass was manufactured.

There are batch identifiers on other bits and pieces of the car as well - the clock-face on the grey head is one.
