with a grey motor that has just been rebuilt/reco would you expect to get any oil coming from the engine breather. i understand that it does not recycle the "fumes" as in later holdens with crankcase ventilation.but i have the odd oil leaks and have been keeping a close eye on what is happening before it goes back to get the rockers re-adjusted. it has done about 700 miles since getting back on the road. any advice .    thanks

This is what I posted on the FB/EK Forum on this subject in September 2010

Well after a fair bit of research online I decided to fit a PCV Valve onto my grey motor, I thought I'd give it a run to make the engine run a bit "cleaner" emmisions wise and hopefully cut down on condensation in the rocker cover for around town short runs. I've replaced the draft tube with a suitable size rubber elbow,red motor PCV, and a clear Diesel filter with a washable element for any oil residue to cling to so it lessens the chance of it going back into the manifold. I was surprised when I googled the subject up how many are fitting inline filters into pcv lines on late model and high performance engines.
I did find a few racing grey motors used in historic racing running PCV's by tapping straight into the top of finned rocker covers but I couldn't do that to mine and I was trying to make it look like it was meant to be there. After I fitted it up I had to retune my carbs to bring the idle down ,at this stage I haven't touched the mixture and fitted a new set of plugs to see how things go. The engine runs happily enough and it will be interesting to see how it goes  anyone else done this on their daily driver?

Since the PCV valve has been fitted in September2010 there hasn't been any problems, it certainly solved my condensation problem from short runs and has eliminated the annoying oil residue that forms in the breather and finally the floor (Yes I know thats how they are supposed to work) I did post pictures on the FB/EK forum. http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=12079&start=0&hilit=pcv

thank you for the reply it appears that the rubber hose is running to the back of the motor and does it enter at the fitting on the top of the cylinder head. near the carbys ??. looks like a very tidy modifcation. i will examine your photos indepth next week-end . and if you don"t mind i would like to know a bit more about the hard-ware.    thanks   alan

Alan,

I ran the hose around the back of the rocker cover to make it look cleaner, it ends up in a 90 degree brass elbow into the centre of the manifold. The elbow fitting,filter and hose are from the local hydraulic shop I went for a clear filter to make monitoring things easier. The rubber elbow is from my junk pile in the shed (you'd have a junk pile in your shed I'm sure) I just ran it as a temporary thing to see if it worked or not, I will make a neater one out of aluminium tube, the pcv valve is a red motor one from Repco.

As you can see its a cheap mod and so far I'm happy with it. Wink
