i have been told that the later red motor type diff centres will bolt into an fc housing allowing you to change ratios. is this so

Yes you are correct just change your rear uni to a red moter type and of you go easy as that

Yes you  can change the centre into the FC housing but the FC tailshaft will not connect up to the later centre, they have different uni joints.
