G'day Guys

After speaking with a few different engineers I'm left dumb founded as to what the largest legal wheel and tyre size is that I can run on my FE.  ???I have a copy of what the requirement is from vic roads.

The width of any replacement rim must not be:
more than 25mm greater than the widest wheel specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that model or vehicle series; or
less than the width of the narrowest rim specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that model or vehicle series.

The overall diameter of any replacement rim and tyre must not be:
more than 15mm greater than largest diameter tyre specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that model or vehicle series; or
more than 15mm less than the smallest diameter tyre specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that model or vehicle series.
Rim and tyre combinations must be in accordance with the recommendations contained in the Tyre and Rim Standards Manual published by the Tyre and Rim Association of Australia and have a load and speed rating equal to or better than that required by the standards for registration.

hi there Air Chief.   When I was looking into buying the wheels for my van I had all sorts of different answers. Although we're in WA I would think that this one rule would apply over there also.  That the alternative wheels technical requirements state that cars manufactured after 1st Jan 1973 have to comply with the rules. As FE/FC models are well within this ADR's don't need to comply concerning wheels. This is what the licensing staff told me but just to be safe I didn't go too large.ie 18,19". My engineer also agreed on this and said wheels wouldn't be a problem.   I went with Boyd Coddington billets. 17x7" all round but still kept with the rules on tire width difference being less than 25mm narrower up front. The front wheels with 215/40/17 size stand only about 10 mm taller than standard wheels, so kept it fairly close there. Also I got front and rear wheels dished so the track has remained exactly the same as orig. With the diff. I got it narrowed as small as possible so the rear wheels had max.dish but still sat in the guards evenly. Hopefully won't have problems when licensing time comes.

Air Chief,
      The way I read it , it would mean 25mm (1") wider than the original rim width ie.  5" standard , 6" allowable .   Years ago when regestering a new car with mags the RTA physically measured the width of the rim and also the "track". Track width was 1 1/4" wider than standard , they "ummed and ahhed" but eventually passed it . That was in 1974 .    
     As for the rim/tyre height , not sure there , Let us know how you get on
