just got some new rubber floor mats

now do they go straight in or did they use an under felt

Originally GMH used a bitumen impregnated card like the one you would find inside the doors or on the roof and under the boot mat. There were strips and panels glued into the lower sections first followed by a larger covering piece. The mat went straight on top of this.
Only the strictest of concourse rebuilders would replicate this as it did end up promoting rust in the floor because it didn't come up easily.
You could use a thin sound deadner sheet or underfelt as a substitute.  Don't go to thick as this will effect the way the mat goes under the scuff plates.
