81  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Engine will not run on: June 05, 2022, 07:29:08 AM
Wookie ..It has happened before , when all is correct , but just dead , wont fire or miss fire , IS THE ROTOR BUTTON sitting on your work bench ?..If its in the dissy ,The quickest and easiest check is ,I'll put myself in your shoes as if it were my problem ..I would take the air cleaner off , looking down the carby ,pump the throttle , you should see a squirt of fuel in the throat of the carby .OK i've got fuel ..take dissy cap off , rotor you can leave there or just take off for good vision , smallish electricians screwdriver needed , ie insulated shaft )..turn ignition on , open and close points , should spark at contacts , if they are in open position , can turn engine to close them or just bridge the contact end to establish spark ..IF you have fuel and spark then the causes multiply , as others have contributed ..( turn off the ignition )  If you DONT have fuel then follow from tank to carby , ie. test either side of fuel pump , test carby as above ..or at least needle and seat ..but you and your mechanic think its the ignition ..are all components in good order and correctly fitted , points installed correctly ? insulating washer in place between dissy body and points tail ? , rotor button is good , brass arm correct length , tang inside not broken off , spring loaded carbon contact inside dissy cap in line with HT lead to coil , dissy cap not a good one .if no spark at points as above , with the ignition on , and a small length of electrical wire , copper inner stripped a little , on the OUTSIDE of the dissy , put one end on the low tension wire from coil to points tail , and just scrape the wire on the body of dissy , if there is spark then its move to examining inside the dissy and onwards, if there is no spark there then its back down the line . ( turn ignition switch off ) , time to consider coil ? ignition switch itself ? all this is based on a stock standard FE or FC Holden ..if you wish can call me 0405 703 413 ...keep well Vern .
82  General / General Board / Re: Registering old number plates on: May 30, 2022, 08:09:21 AM
Ken ..Be careful, are the old plates you are wanting to keep registered in the name of the owner you now want to renew , you mentioned the car in 2018 has new owner ..In Robs post the old plates he wanted were available , so must have been surrendered..I have been down this road , I bought a 1969 Hillman Hunter to restore with original plates attached in 2016 ..I went to RMS and inquired about the plates , ( knowing full well where they were ) but I, just like you , wasn't sure of the outcome of the revelation , the answer I got was,
" I can't tell you who the owner is , but the plates are allocated to a Hillman Hunter " The car was last registered in 1993 ..So , I would have to get the owner of those plates to surrender them ,you cant transfer the rego of an unregistered vehicle, then apply for them myself ..as it turned out the car was last registered in his mums name and she had since passed ..all to messy ..I went for club rego and just kept the old plates ..since sold the car and gave plates with it ..Just to recap, to focus on your situation , if the plates you want to use are allocated to that vehicle but in another persons name then you cant just do a swap ..I never asked if there was any penalties if plates had to be surrendered first....In your case you say the vehicle was re-registered with new plates and new owner in 2018 but still have the original plates , well those plates were allocated to that car , at the point of reregistration some one must have stated NO Plates attached , you could say the original plates have been found ( in a box of spares or under the spare wheel )and you want to do a plate swap, you will probably have to surrender the current ones .. cheers Vern

Is that right 196 miles used 40 litres fuel ? Thats 4.9 miles per litre ? Wow !!!! great post tough , great trip , over here in NSW after all the rain you need to line up a semi like you were behind , and when they go down a pot hole you shoot straight along the top of the load , no passing, just a new meaning to " overtaking " ..keep well Vern ..

97  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Fc brake drums on: March 22, 2022, 07:27:04 AM
Wookie ..Out of round drums don't necessarily shake the steering wheel really badly , out of round usually means machining ,and as you have found they cant be machined any more , they must also be distorted or buckled , some how , its a wonder you were able to fit them without being suspicious something is not right ,I would also check your steering goemetery if it magnifies the fault so badly .and wheel balance...you will get some good drums i'm sure ...Vern .
I had a really good condition stock standard rim when restoring my car , needed a ton of lead to balance and bead seat was weird , I guess a reject slips through the system now and then ,we concluded why it was in such good condition it was never used much .maybe on a trailer.it went to the scrappy ...

OK ..Thanks for your thoughts ..In the dark distant memories of my mind , I seem to recall a kit , basically a pump made by Ferropro ( I think ) and you had to drill holes , pump in fish oil , and fit plastic plugs provided in the drilled holes ..It had a distinct fish smell which would fade away ,when working on my car on a couple of places the heat of the grinder occasionally I got a fish oil smell  . I have a tin of Ferropro fish oil , probably had it for 45 yrs ..but no pump/applicator...
I am thinking of a garden pump sprayer , Nylex 5 litre plunger pump ..extend the clear PVC tube a bit with a heavier walled tube ,maybe braided air line hose , and fit a 360deg pintle nozzle ..often used in plant nurserys / agriculture ...get some blanking plugs to suit the hole that will be needed to fit the nozzle /tube through and work the tube back and forth in cavities covering internal surface ..Its a wonder some company hasn't come up with such a solution to address this situation..keep well Vern
