21  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: seat surrounds on: November 22, 2020, 09:17:10 AM
Here's the project, from the tabs on my seat seems the metal surrounds are not as wide along the seat edge where the tabs are. Some have suggested removing or shortening these tabs and screwing into the frame at the back top edge.

Jonno
Thanks for the heads, up as I am fitting EK metal surround to the FC seat. Now I know to do the tab before it goes to the trimmers.

Cheers

Hi Guys - think this may be the thread I was looking for? but of the course the pics are not available anymore  Sad

Rusty,

some minor mods only seem to be required. check here:

http://www.fefcholden.org.au/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=hotup;action=display;num=1129105106;start=2

Jonno

P.S I haven't actually done this...I plan on using an EK bench in my ute

I've found two links so far and both aren't working - can someone point me to the thread about fitting EK seat sides. I was going to put some in my ute - couple hints in the threads I found with the links is that there is a couple of tricks to doing it.
TIA

Hi, I did a full bare metal rebuild on my FE and used 'Car Builders' products, https://www.carbuilders.com.au/sounddeadener. No need to paint first, I just applied rust converter/de-oxydiser before installing sound deadening adhesive sheets. I also used the sheets in the doors and rear quarters. Great stuff to work with, I also used their water proof underlay under my carpet as insurance. Regards Doug

Thanks Doug, have them on my list to look at.

Helen ..I used " DEDNA " self adhesive sheets inside doors ,very happy ,Daleys Motor trimmer supplies in Sydney , and their underfelt under carpet ...Vern ..

Thanks Vern, will look into it
26  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: floor covering on: November 16, 2020, 07:34:02 AM
Do you put the same stuff in the doors?
27  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: floor covering on: November 16, 2020, 07:18:53 AM
Original had a thin bituminous material stuck to the floor followed by a hessian like underfelt.
It was never really an ideal solution as it retained water and promoted floor rust.
Better products exist now such as Dynamat which adheres to the floor and has some thickness to reduce noise.
My opinion is to coat the floor well with a rust resistant paint followed by a quality adhesive matting which is moisture proof and sound deadening.

Ken

Thanks Ken

I usually find I can't put more than one link in a post - get that "forbidden 440" message , two if I'm lucky - use the preview function first before posting and if the pics don't show, delete one until they do and then do another post for more pics.
32  For Sale and Wanted / Parts Wanted / Re: inner door moisture seal plastic - or whatever they call them on: May 10, 2020, 08:28:41 AM
Hi All

Probably a little while off before I put door cards on - everythings going very slowly - too much work and too many projects :-( .
And of course when I go to finish off that "quick" job, I find more needs to be done or while doing that job you find all these other little things that "probably should be done while I'm at it and got it all open …..!"
I do have the plastic plugs to use - thanks for the tips.

Thanks - just wasn't sure if I needed them - though I will see once the seat is back in and I start driving her if I will need the seat raised or not.  Grin
34  Technical Board / Restoration Help / seat mounting bracket spacers on: May 08, 2020, 09:02:16 PM
Hi All

I've read some posts and am still unclear as to if the seat mounting bracket spacers came with the cars originally or were they something put in later - and what they are actually for.

TIA

Thanks fcwrangler will try the acetone first no hurry so maybe a few applications might work can you still get new windscreens for them do you know ?  (Just in case)
How’s your project going?
Cheers Peter

Hi Peter, apart from the odd second hand one - you can also buy them new. I don't know anything about the product but there is at least a couple where you can get new screens:

Helen,

I must admit to some curiosity about the "garden-art" FJ.  Where's the original-equipment rust in the front floors?  If the rest of the car's that good, it'd be a viable fixer-upper.  But if it was a speedway car, the exterior bodywork will be somewhat bruised and scarred.

Rob

Tis true, she is a little beat up - but remarkably the floors are in good nick - you are not the first to notice this. We are probably not doing this one up (never say never) but love the history - if you can believe it when we picked him up, had a mishap with the car trailer so had to stop at Bunnings in Wagga - who pulls up in the carpark but the speedway driver's daughter - who now lives interstate but was visiting family that weekend - all excited to see her Dad's old car

Gosh Rob, you've me even more curious now, and yes the old ute would definitively have been a farm ute - had a look at our FJ garden art and it does look the same shape, though this one doesn't have the beaded edge. Also this humpy used to be a speedway car so who knows what's been done to it.

Hey Longman, we'll ponder modifying the one we have for bit longer, if we don't do that I'll be in touch. Thanks

When in doubt I always refer to the parts book
There are 3 different plates

FX FJ.   7402030.  8 screws
FE and half way through FC.   7408289.    8 screws
Late FC to EK.   7414656.    10 screws

Oh, and just to muddy the waters some more, the 8 hole variety have a smaller diameter self tapping screw than the 10 hole type which has a machine screw

Ken

Muddy Muddy Muddy - this also goes to explain why some of the screws I thought were for the plate weren't quite right
39  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: gearbox inspection plate - floor on: May 03, 2020, 09:57:50 AM
Helen,

That's an FX-FJ cover (let me go check).  Yes, it is.

Rob

Nope - done some more head scratching and lining up this morning  - both the inspection plates I had were originally screwed in to two other donor cars - one was an FB and the other was an FC Ute. Couldn't figure out why on earth I thought it would screw straight in,  we still have the FB in the paddock so took a look today - it has the 10 holes, we have swapped them around with he FC which we no longer own (sorry to the fella that bought that one oops) - which must have had 8 holes originally.  As it came out of an FC Ute I didn't check it (wrist slap to me) and must have just assumed it would fit - yes this has been sitting in my box of parts for a while now before getting around to reinstalling it.

Second light bulb - the floor of my ute has a ding at the edge of the inspection plate hole and that is what is keeping the plate from sitting down properly.

So --- as fcwrangler said (I thought he was referring to differences in FB and FC) the FCs came out with either of 10 holes or 8 holes.

We reckon well be able to straighten the ding enough to get a better fit and drill new holes in the plate for the ones that don't line up with the floor nuts - loolks like at least half will line up already, so only need to fix the others.

I see how we go, thanks all

Yeah the car has 10 holes in the floor and the cover I have has 8 and also it doesn't quite fit in properly - a bit flatter on the left top side - its more of a gap than it looks in the pic.
