General / General Board / Grey motor reco cost
|
on: February 19, 2013, 05:29:13 PM
|
We are currently fixing up the grey in our FJ. Thought you guys may be interested in the cost.
Rebore, acid clean block and head, red motor valves with hardened exhaust seats, rings, bearings, deck block, head service with new guides, grind crank, gaskets, new clutch and face flywheel. $ 2724.
Does not include pistons, I was lucky to have a set, and assembly. I used the existing cam, I also had a set of refaced lifters hanging around.
Not running yet, I'm still assembling.
I can understand them costing 5K or so from go to whoa.
Colin.

Just for simplicity, especially if the ute is close to stock, I would rip the gas out and spend the money on getting it running nice.

Graham, as Velo said, you may be over charging the battery. if you've got 18 volts you may not have any current. I would probably look at your regulator.

We've just returned from the FX-FJ Nats. We have a stock FJ 215. A very good weekend, well run and lots of cars. Unfortunately I am not the one to be asking about piccies.
They had the usual welcome BBQ on Friday night, up at McPhillamy Park, Show on Saturday, Observation Run and cruise on Sunday, to Canowindra, then driving events and main dinner on Monday.
As I said, we had a great weekend and well done to the NSW FX-FJ guys and girls.

A lot of water pumps for example had grey motors driving them. I remember there used to be one at a pumping station next the road between Wagga and Junee. I would imagine they would have had something along these lines fitted to them.

Technical Board / General Technical / Re: fe drum brake upgrade

If you can find backing plates from a HD king pin front end or late EH commercial you will be able to use HR size front linings. This is what I use in my EH. Not sure if they fit an FE front end. I use HKTG front cylinders with HR disc rears. If you go to a racing supply place they will be able to get you racing linings.
Cut the rim off the back of the backing plate and go mad with your drill on whats left. You'll need to source forged drums also. I now use bolts to hold the front linings in place. Make sure you use braided flexible lines.
Have fun!
Colin.
PS: DON'T use standard drums for racing. They WILL shatter.

Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: welding up a banjo diff
|
on: October 19, 2012, 01:54:34 PM

I don't see why a welded diff wouldn't last on the street. You'd have to be doing naughty things all the time. The diff in my EH is a welded banjo and so far has lasted over 12 months racing. I don't dump the clutch as this breaks axles but other wise is fine. I'm running in a dyno day tomorrow so hopefully will find out my power output. The only time you really notice the diff is when turning hard at low speeds, like parking. On grass it's fine.

That pic of the Sydney tram with the old red rattler going over the bridge. Isn't that on the eastern side of the railway just north or south of Central station? Geez I wish I took more notice of things when I was a kid.

Funny about that Dave. I got one too. No idea where it came from either.

And it sort of matches my car!
