1  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Smiths Gauges (Again) on: July 05, 2014, 03:38:35 PM
Thanks Keith and RET,

RET am I correct in reading between the lines that I should reconsider fitting the ammeter? The gauge I have got didn't include wiring and I was only going to fit it it due to its looks not from a functional point of view.

Rod

Do yourself a favour Rod and put the amp meter on your shed's shelf as an ornament and buy a Smiths voltmeter a practical and safe alternative.

Skuta,

Before you start thinking of diff centre changes, running different profile/size wheels have a play with this

You can try different combinations of diff ratios or tyre sizes and see what they translate to on the road Wink

3  General / General Board / Re: old school engine Mods on: February 10, 2014, 11:39:28 PM
John,

As described so accurately by "Keith EFFCEE"

"This mod was common in Grey motors that engaged in combat on the race track. Due to the poor design of the water circulation throughout the engine, the Grey Motor developed steam pockets in the head when in full war cry, as a result, heads developed cracks and headgaskets felt the need to be elsewhere with great regularity.

To solve this problem the thermostat was blocked off and holes were drilled at even points along the head. A coolant "manifold" was then made up to allow steam pockets to escape and return the water to the radiator."

Thanks for the descrition and pic of the head modification Grin but I've got to ask, is that brace on the front of the head going to the inner guard?Huh?

This is the set up on my race car No 53

Spotted this on Gumtree, considering I know people that have spent the asking price of this on a paintjob alone this ute sounds like a bargain Wink

I've got a set from the first one listed out of Wollongong and I'm happy with the quality and fit Grin

The old greys do need help in breathing and I would agree anything is better than stock.

13  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Electric fuel pump for the grey motor on: April 23, 2013, 11:52:05 AM
I wouldnt think it would be such an issue to turn the engine over a fair few times before it fires because you are getting oil pressure up to the rocker gear and other places before ignition which isnt a bad thing.

Good point Wink although I ended putting an electric fuel pump on my 36 Ford (flathead of course) as a back up, because it's not an everyday driver I found it took some winding over before she'd fire up. I put the electric pump on set up through a toggle switch, hit the switch, let it tick away for a minute then hit the key and away it goes, turn the electric pump off and drive away Grin Grin Grin I guess it makes it easier for the mechanical pump to do its job after sitting for a few weeks.

it sounds like you're saying grafting a ute floor into another vehicle qualifies it as a commercial... surely not in any State?

have you got a supporting document/ link?

Cheers

Ed

I think he means rebodying the whole thing over the Hilux chassis, is that what you mean John???

Due to the lower tyre profiles to maintain highway speed at realistic rev.s and true speedo calibration a necessary evil

This link is always handy when changing diff centres / tyres etc.

3.89 is standard for all FE FC. A stockie in good order can easily run a 3.55 ratio and improve fuel economy on long runs. 3.55 ratios first appeared in the EH.

Ken

Also worth mentioning if you swap to a later diff centre (3.55) it's a different rear universal  Wink

There's no difference in a HP or 179 engine.
ACE  Cool

Have heard the arguments for and against over this question for a long time, bit like the grey motors and the canadian blocks question Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I'm a confirmed grey motor man but I'll be interested if someone can clarify the HP block question Wink
