Technical Board / General Technical / Diff ratios
|
on: November 25, 2005, 09:44:32 AM

Hi all. I recently changed my perished Olympic Air Rides for 175/13 80 series radials. Since then, I have comprehensively sorted brakes, front end, etc., The upshot of all this is, that after replacing both rear wheel bearings, I now know the diff is noisy. As I intend to take the car to Philip Island, the issue of cruising revs has become an issue. With no technical knowledge, please bear with me from here. I understand the standard grey diff ratio is 3.89. I have been advised that these diffs use unique bearings and rebuild is expensive. I am told that the 179 Manual diff is a 3.55 and the traumatics run a 3.36. I understand the yoke is different and would require either an EH tailshaft or modification of my existing tailshaft. My car has a brand new Air Ride in the boot so as a start I thought I should compare the rolling circumference with the radials. This is what I found. Radial was inflated to 32psi for the exercise. The Air Ride circumference is 216.3cm, the Michelin 184.1cm. This means the difference is 14.9%!! If I'm not wildly off beam, does this mean I could run a 4.47 diff and have the same final drive ratio as with radials? If I haven't stuffed up somewhere, am I right in thinking I could put a 3.36 in the car, 13.4% taller than than the 3.89 and still have the overall gearing a little lower than with cross plys? Your views would be appreciated John

I recently bought a set of Michelin MX 175 R13s, which are also coded 86T. These look nearly the same height as the crossplys I took off. They weren't cheap though, about $140 each. These were the tallest I could find. Got them from Bob Jane. regards John

Hi all, Is there any such thing as an FC 3 door "wagonette"? If there is, Shannons allegedly have one in their Melbourne auction next Monday. regards John

Thanks Stinky.
I know about sheepskin covers, but I can't find a maker of the older style fabric covers we used to be able to buy for bench seats. I've googled and yellowed to no avail.
can anyone help?
regards
John

Technical Board / General Technical / Grey motor rebuild
|
on: October 14, 2005, 08:56:59 PM
|
Hi everyone,
My apologies if this has been covered before. I have an EJ with a tired grey.
I thought I might rebuild it as a warm one with period gear. What would work well? Doesnt need to be stressed or cranky.
I am thinking twin carbs (what type?) higher comp pistons, ported head? balanced, extractors.
I just want a bit more urge so she can better keep up with traffic and cruise a bit easier. I want to retain the three speed, front end etc.,
Hope this hasn't been asked too many times before!
What are your thoughts?

Technical Board / General Technical / Engine fumes and brakes
|
on: October 07, 2005, 11:15:42 PM
|
Hi all. Just bought an EJ. I last owned a grey Holden 20 years ago so I'm a bit rusty (fortunately the car isn't). Firstly this site is terrific, I already know why the brake pedal sinks, when I fix the master should the pedal feel wooden? It hasn't got a booster. What is an acceptable level of fumes from one of these engines? When its hot and running it comes out the lower breather and when I stop, from the rocker cover. I'm not a mechanic, anyone know a good old Holden person not too far from Chatswood in Sydney? thanks John

Thanks for the website Pete. I can't believe you can still buy weathershields for old cars. They even have one for my Fiat 2300! Regards John

Thanks for the comments fellas.
This is one I didn't buy. It is in QLD, a 57 Shoreline Beige Special with a Detroit (?) stripe in Brown, not sure what the coulir of this is.
Nos are 225-31100 A 184-473 256-7484 Eng 7408858? Should be L408858?
Supposed to have 55,000 mls, no books. Has been repainted, interior looks terrific, engine bay and boot are untidyish. The owner Sam, who is a decent guy, doesn't think there is much rust in it-he says the subframes are good but covered in proofcoat. Doesn't know about the sills. I may have tried to buy it, but for the EJ. Full details are on carsales.com.au under Holden-FE.
Sam is asking $11,900 for the car, I told him I couldn't pay that much. I have extra photos but I can't work out how to post them!

Hi Guys
I know its not an FE/FC but...
In my search for an FE I tripped over this 30,000 mile EJ. I'm afraid the obsession with these runs deep, my Dad had one and I had one 20 years ago.
Just have to keep looking!
