Technical Board / Restoration Help / How to soften the Vinyl on seats and door trims.

Does anyone know a method or product etc that will soften the Vinyl on my FC Army sedan. The FC 217 has its original seats and trim in good condition for its age but im too scared to sit in the car for fear of ripping the seats as they seem very hard. Any ideas how to soften the Vinyl?? I dont care how long the process takes to soften as long as i can save the interior because its one of only two Army staff cars known to survive and probably the only 1958 FC 217 Army Staff car left in existence with its original brown interior and exterior paint. As many people would be aware the other known Army car was fully restored by Ken. Im also trying to get the rust stains and spots off the paint if anyone has a safe method to use that wont take off too much paint . Thank you in advance.

Thanks Nick. Trying to avoid a buff. It would definitely do the job but i dont want to take too much paint off it. Prefer to do it by hand but looking for something i can apply that might break down the rust stains on the paint. Its more rust stains on top of the paint by the look of it. I tried a bit of CLR clear on a rag but didnt seem to do much. :-( Thanks for the welcome on my other post, re the Army sedan.

Technical Board / Restoration Help / surface rust and spot rust removal from original paint

Hi guys, Just wondering if anyone has any tips for removing surface rust and rust spots from the paint on an original FC sedan that was sitting in a farm shed for over 40 years until a few years ago. It has its original green Army paint but has surface rust over the top of roof , bonnet and boot and i tried extra cut polish by hand and it works but very very slowly. Any ideas of something i can use thats quicker but NOT too harsh that it will take all the paint off. Any tricks guys?? Thanks in advance , Damo.

Thank you for the replies. My initial idea was to restore the FC but when i looked at it on the weekend i found it to be in very original condition. It has original paint and its original brown interior in very good dusty condition so i thought maybe get it home and carefully clean it, get the surface rust spots of the paint, fix a few dents and carefully polish the paint, blend some paint where needed, clean the seats and door trims and headlining , fix any structural rust and get it going. Replace windscreen and all perished rubber etc etc and leave it. Any thoughts? Thanks Damo.

Could you please explain the general purpose / use of the FC staff sedan?? What sort of duties would it / could it have been used for? The previous owner claims the car i just bought FC 217 65M was sold by the Department of Defence in 1970 to the old guy he got it from. That would seem quite a long time to hold onto such an early model?? Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, new here. I have a couple of questions regarding FC Army cars. Can anyone tell me how many 1958 FC 217 Business sedans were made for the Australian army as staff cars? I hear there were around 800 Business sedans made in total but im interested to know a rough estimate of how many were actually ordered as Army sedans and how many are left / survive? Thank you.
