1  General / General Board / AN UPDATE FROM GARY ....... From GOING GREY on: February 05, 2013, 07:24:43 PM
Firstly a big thank you for the response on the forum. What a great medium to get yourself, interest, information out there. Secondly, to the FE-FC club members on the hill at Sandown in November, thank you for a great reception! I think Eddie is still amazed that people would want a photo of him & their cars & what a line-up of cars. From standard, as it is to some sensational mechanical marvels. Also some useful feedback on our venture. Even being in the trade doesn't seem to help with some of our engine rebuilders. Most showing little interest in boat anchors/steam engines etc. Some with no response & some several weeks after  the enquiry. Eventually we have settled on one particular re-builder after much promoting that normally does the machining on Eddies race engines. So we have our block machine to 3.1.25, crank shaft ground, cam ground and cam bearings fitted. We're now in the process of reaming gudgeon bushes, rocker bushes and cleaning up a lot of the Generals casting exuberance. Returning oil to the sump is critical in our experience. We are also in the process of tooling up, making specific tools to suit only this motor, i.e complete 12 valve spring suppressor, gudgeon & rocker bush press etc.
So the process is taking more time than anticipated but both of us having our own full time businesses & families doesn't leave a lot of spare time. However the project is happening and as they say in the classics, we're looking at the big picture so preparation is vital. Not being particularly IT savvy, I'm more than happy to take calls after 5pm during the week and any time on the weekend on 0400 212 044.

Question for the forum from Going Grey.
Opinions on the proposal to supply a complete bolt in reco engine gearbox combination ready to go?
Opinion on whether to build a 3:25 twin carburetor hotty or a fairly standard reco for an authentic restoration?

STeam man
Thanks for the response
We know that gray motor crank bearing surfaces become oval and tapered due to the lack of an engine oil filter. Finding decent. Cranks will be a challenge but they are about.and any engine we build will have an oil filter fitted regardless.
We have also found that mineral based oil is better for these engines than synthetic oil for white metal bearings .There are new cranks available, but at $4000.00 plus this would make a rebuild prohibitive ,unless your going to race the beast.

I have read comments on the site about the difficulty in getting Holden Grey Motors reconditioned/machining etc. My brother & I are about to launch our own engine rebuild business that will specialize only in Holden Grey Motors. The business will go under the name of 'GOING GREY' & my brother, Mr.FE Eddie Dobbs & I will be offering our combined 30+ years experience of racing & building these engines.
The business will offer a complete rebuild package including engine, head, carburation, starter, generator, alternator, gear box, clutch etc. as a ready to run/go package to be fitted to your car.
Standard, mild, club sport to full racing motors can be built.
Any suggestions, ideas, feedback, are welcome to finalize the planning stages of the venture.
Thanks
Garry Dobbs
