Technical Board / General Technical / Snapped rocker gear bolt
|
on: May 20, 2007, 10:39:23 AM
|
Snapped a rocker gear bolt today putting my replacement grey motor head on (one of the long boths that secure the rocker gear onto the head). It has snapped level with the head. Anyone got some bright ideas for getting it out, I hate drilling and using easy outs, they never work for me, who ever called them easy outs was a bloody liar

I can't remeber how to tell the difference between the 948 and 1275 engines but I am sure a quick search would put you right. North south 1275 motors are like hens teeth, here is another bit of trivia, some New Zealand Marinas were fitted with 1275 A series motors but not Aussi ones.
I think the sebring sprite came about in 57 but I could be wrong, they had a different front end (like a cross between the later midgets and the bug eye sprite) and had hardtops. Search for the sprite club and drop them an email, there is a pretty big movement here in Australia. In some states (such as WA) there is no sprite club but they come under the Austin Healey banner. We had the combined car club bash here on the weekend, pitty I did not know about it then as I could have hit up the sprite guys for some info.
From memory Speedwell had a website and try Spridget too, I use to order gear online and get it shipped over.

The sprinzel sprite is an interesting one Rob, is there any paperwork or badging to go with it, any idea of what year John Sprinzel did the hot up and is it still a 948 or did it include a 1275 upgrade? I use to own a mark IIA which was the next model and actually had it in tas with me when I lived there, great fun on those roads.
I find the sprite interesting as John Spritzel is a racing legend who was involved with the development of the famous Sebring sprite which is now replicated by fans across the world. He was a major player in the early years of Speedwell engineering and it is interesting that a car came out of his hands with the extras such as bumpers, overriders and luggage rack attached as these are usually the first things to go when sprites are modified.
Great story and thanks for sharing.

See you later Harko, may be one day you will understand.
Cheers John What is that meant to mean? Seems pretty rude when it is pointed at someone who has as much knowledge and history on this forum as Harko. Maybe I missed something in the build up to this, as I have not been around much lately. I'm not sure I saw RET's comment as a put down directed personally at Harko or anyone else for that matter. As with most posts on the forum, I read it as one persons opinion. Harko leaving the forum that is a loss that we all should be mourning, he is a true Guru when it comes to kustom knowledge and one whos wealth of knowledge will be sorely missed.

Hey Burnsy. That first FJ is still around. It was recently found and is being pieced back together. Regards Alex Was it found over east there that it was found? Interesting if it was as it would be cool to find out how it found it's way east. Kalamunda where they both were licenced (KM number plates) is my suburb. Would be a cool find, it had a EJ grey motor in it. Apparently there were four custom FJ's wearing KM plates at the time and one was running a 272 V8.

Here are a couple of local FJ's The first wears Toyota headlights and the second wears International headlights. Some of the WA guys may recognise the name of the second cars owner. He now has a head reconditioning business in Maddington - Vosbergen Heads.

Thanks guys, I can't shed any light on it either yet as I have not got off my ass and checked anything out. Sounds like Martin and Ken have hit the nail on the head though. For the moment I am just using it as an excuse to leave school at 3.00pm when the kids do

Definitely too much right overall size, wrong design in my eyes. Stick with the original flame design and just make it bigger to cover more area. I like it coming off near the headlight though and wrapping around the wheel arch just need to modify the flames so they pass each side of your chrome strip - don't cut them around the chrome.

The seller posted a revision yesterday saying no more bids the motor is sold. He did not have on the ad that the motor was advertised elsewhere and there were already bids on it. Does anyone know if this is allowed?
Also anyone know who may have convinced the seller to do this so they could buy it? I want to find out more about the alloy sideplate!

I love flames and have plans to do my front end one day. In my opinion those are too small for your car and the same design needs to be used but enlarged by about 3 - 4 times to cover more of your fender. Personally I like the gosted on flames using peal paints. your design is very 70's and reminds me of a covette stingray matchbox toy I had when I was a kid. As said, just my opinion.
