Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Ignition timing question

Back in the fifties the petrol was of a poor standard, the dizzy could only be advanced a couple of degrees. When we did a road test we would drive the car up a hill and load the engine and adjust timing so that it pinged slightly. Some cars had so much carbon in the combustion chamber, they pinged at the standard setting. A lot of cars of the day (not Holdens) had to be decoked every 10000 miles which meant the head had to be removed and normally would have a valve grind at the same time.

Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Mystery flywheel timing ball

Rob,
By my calculations the timing mark is 60 degrees from the correct position. I've never tried to fit a flywheel without dowels but I assume it would be by 90 degree increments. With the other question I can't remember whether I used a particular procedure.

Technical Board / General Technical / Mystery flywheel timing ball

I was asked to start an EJ Holden with a newly installed rebuilt engine. I found the rotor in the distributor was spinning on the shaft . Rectified that problem but car wouldn't start. It was fitted with the electronic conversion and I eventually started the car with the rotor pointing to no.5 on the dizzy cap. He asked me to change the dizzy to points as the car had broken down several times. He had new points and condenser but all other dizzy parts had been binned. Thanks to Rob he was able to supply the missing parts and install them on the dizzy. I located the timing mark on the fly wheel and put a dab of white paint on it. The car still wouldn't start so I removed the rocker cover and turned engine to have no.6 valves rocking but the the timing mark was not visible. Retimed the dizzy and the car started straight away. The timing mark was 1/6th of dizzy turn away. I had a look at his old motor and it had 1 dowel still in the crankshaft. I've never come across a problem like this after working on greys since the early 50s.

My FE Holden turned 60 recently which means I have owned it for 60 years on the 2nd of October 2017. It was been back on the road since 2004 and has been used at club events etc. since then. I'll be towing my little pop top caravan from Sydney to the Victorian Club weekend at Echuca on the 21st and 22nd of October.

General / General Board / Re: 4.89 Ratio Grey Diff
|
on: March 10, 2015, 04:21:42 PM

The crown wheel & pinion were purchased from a place at Concord (Sydney) near where American Autos used to be. They stocked a lot of new ex army parts and I was told the diff parts were manufactured in England for government Holden utes but they must have cancelled the order. I had a spare diff at the time & diff repairer fitted the new parts plus bearings etc.

The diff on the left of photo is the low ratio one and the other is a 3.89. The low ratio one has a much thicker crown wheel & smaller pinion. The second photo shows the only markings visible on the crown wheel I had a look at the diff today and counted the teeth, crown wheel 34 & pinion 7 teeth.
