Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Oil Leak in Grey Motor

Hi Keith,
Thanks for your advice, I am talking with GEM on this issue, they require a photo of the missing bolt hole so as to make a decision, my mechanic will also put a quote together as to the time required to pull the Cam out so to facilitate replacement of the missing bolt.
I will keep you updated.
Regards
John

Hi Colt,
Yes you are correct about the holes in the cam, when the engine is turned you can see the missing bolt, however it is at an angle to the cam hole not straight in line with the hole.
I will take another look tomorrow and see if there is enough clearance to insert a bolt.
Regards
John

Hi Keith,
I have removed the Harmonic Balanced and the Cover Plate, the Oil Screw is in place, however cannot see second bolt that holds the Plate in place.
I am not sure of the next step, I will have to wait and see what GEM are going to do, I hope it will be a happy outcome with them.

John

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Oil Leak in Grey Motor

Hi Colin,
Yes it is certain that GEM have left the top plate retaining bolt out, this is where the oil is leaking out at this stage, there is no access from the front, however is it possible to screw the bolt from the reverse side ?
Who knows what other problems are lurking in the Grey.
I went to REPCO this morning where I purchased the Grey, they have suggested to contact GEM direct and explain the problem, I am sure they will want to know about this situation as there maybe more Greys with a similar problem.
Please stand by for GEM's solution to my dilemma.
Regards
John

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Oil Leak in Grey Motor
|
on: May 31, 2009, 09:00:53 AM
|
G'Day All, I purchased a reconditioned Long GEM Grey from REPCO in Feb 07, I installed the motor and started it up yesterday for the first time. There is a Oil Leak from a missing bolt hole behind the Large Cam Pulley Cog, it appears to install the bolt the Cam will have to be pulled out, along with all the push rods etc. Has anyone experienced this problem from a GEM Grey, and possibly provide some assistance as to my next move Regards John

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Ignition Coil Orientation
|
on: May 27, 2009, 10:48:52 AM
|
G'Day All,
I know this topic has been discussed in the past, however with a new Ignition Coil (e.g. Bosch GT 40) is the orientation with the cable facing down OK, or are they required to be mounted horizontally due to modern specs?
The instructions suggest mounting on the Firewall or Inside Fender.

John

Technical Board / Restoration Help / FE Ute Ash Tray
|
on: May 10, 2009, 08:38:16 AM
|
G'Day all
I have two Ash Trays one with a Lighter, one with a Blank, they are approx. 2-3mm longer than the opening in the Dash.
Is there a difference in FE/FE and FB/EK Dash opening size.
Regards
John

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Replacing Oil Bath Filter Medium

Hi Ken,
I sandblasted the Filter two years ago and painted 2 pack black, after washing and blowing many times there is still fine grains of sand coming out, everything is new or re-conditioned on this Ute including the 138 Grey, so I am not taking any chances.

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Gearbox Clearance
|
on: April 10, 2009, 09:29:45 AM
|
Hi Ken,
You were spot on, I do have EK Bkts in my FE Ute, I checked with a mate up the road in Wilberforce, Greg Holden and his FE Panelvan has the correct Bkts, there is approx. 1/2" difference in the outside mounting hole which will allow the gearbox to clear the floor hump.

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Gearbox Clearance
|
on: March 23, 2009, 12:29:37 PM
|
G'Day all, I have installed 138 Grey with standard gearbox into my FE Ute, it appears that there is very little clearance between the floor hump and the gearbox approx. 3mm. Where the Engine Mount attachment Bkts bolt to the Sub Frame, are there spaces that allow the Bkts to be lower and allow more clearance for the Gearbox Regards John G
