G'day all

Still on the hunt however I've changed my mind after some discussion with a few people and I'm after a Manifold to suit triple down draft strombergs or a twin side draft manifold (suit Grey motor). I understand that these are probably few and far between but anyone with one of these two types of manifold willing to part with it please send me a PM or email me at jm712@uow.edu.au.

I understand that due to these types being rarer they fetch a higher price, I will pay good money for a manifold in good usable condition (even if I have to clean it up a bit).

Any help would be greatly appreciated! There has to be some out there!

Fair enough, I'll have to look into it further... still reckon there would have to be something else that would do the trick.
Did anyone end up having a geez at the summit site? or have some detailed piston dimensions?

There is a site that i've seen when looking for other bits and pieces; http://www.summitracing.com/

They have a pretty cool Catalog set up that allows you to search for pistons amongst other things by their dimensions rather than what they suit. You can specify the bore size etc and search for available pistons.

These are some pistons with bore size 3.071 inches, slightly bigger than a std 138 - http://www.summitracing.com/search/Department/Engines-Components/Part-Type/Pistons/Bore-in/3-071-in/?Ns=Rank|Asc

Does any one know the compression distance of the grey motor pistons std? I'm sure some one here knows enough about std grey motor piston dimensions that they could use this to see if theres something suitable. There would be a limited range that you could vary conrod length (if at all successfully) but there's quite a few feasible bore sizes (i.e. greater than std but smaller than something like 3.25 from a 149) as long as we can find something with a suitable compression distance and pin location / geometry.... as mentioned earlier pin diameter can be compensated for with bushing to some degree...

Hopefully someone who knows more about grey motor pistons than I can have a geez and see if theres anythin feasible... or give me some piston dimensions etc

Cheers for that mate!,

I'd seen these... the Cain one I think is a bit over priced  Undecided
I don't really like the look of the other one... Have you / anyone had any experience with the performance of the monaro motors ones? Do they flow alright?

G'day

I'm looking to buy a twin carb manifold to suit down draft style carbs i.e. stromie's for a grey motor. I'd also consider other types of multi-carb manifolds i.e. triples in side or down draft but preference is for the twin setup.
I'd prefer something bare i.e. no carbs but would consider a whole set up and would appreciate it if you would be willing to post it to me if not from close by (Wollongong area).

PM me if you have one that you think i'd be interested in that your willing to part with.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Great looking car mate!!! Shocked I really like the colour also!
10  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Fuel injecting a grey motor on: May 26, 2009, 11:51:11 AM
Motorcycle TB's on a twin carb manifold could work well, At least that would improve the fuel distribution as Ed highlighted... falcon unit contains two injectors so still could be an option from the cost effective point of view. I don't see why you couldn't adapt one injector per throttle body and not use the two barrel housing. The adaption would be the only tricky bit I reckon.

I reckon they could supply enough fuel as long as you got the pulse and everything right... the injectors themselves are capable of running the 4lt falcon 6.... almost twice as big capacity wise as the grey!...? Why would the std falcon pulse and everything not work? it adjusts itself of o2 sensor so should be able to keep mixture right. They were designed to work like electronic carbies so I think they'd have to be close to the mark. Falcon motor has the same firing order I believe....

Could always just go TBI, use one of the falcon units. Set up would still use an oxygen sensor etc so would still have potential to be a considerable improvement on a carb from that point of view.

Correct me if i'm wrong but the system pictured above only has three injectors anyway?! It would be hard to achieve multi point injection with shared ports. At least with the falcon unit you can just adapt to a two barrel inlet manifold....

Would it be possible to mount the injectors in the head perhaps? not to familiar with greys but if there was enough room and meat around the inlet ports could you mount them there? then fire the fuel straight behind each valve? then you could have 6 injectors...

12  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Engine swaps on: May 24, 2009, 10:41:34 AM
I have considered this (rover V8) pretty extensively, I got a magazine article (very old edition of custom rodder) about a bloke that did it with the oldsmobile version, same motor with different heads, The pics and info was limited but it didn't look to hard. I have a rover unit in my shed and width wise it'll be an easy fit, the cylinder heads finish vertically on the outside like the old buick motors and as such I think even the exhaust wouldn't be to much work compared to the holden or chev units. This is only my estimates and early measurements etc as I haven't actually put one in.

Unfortunately with the new guidelines that seem to be being introduced even this motor will be to big capacity wise.

It's a bit of a joke to limit us to around 200ci!!!! no more 202's!
What is the difference between an FB, EK front sub-frame an an FE-FC one? any? would it be possible to use this instead?
I remember reading about someone who had to register an fc as an fe for this reason....

Could we use their own rubbish against them?

Just a thought

14  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Rebuilding roller rockers...???? on: April 12, 2009, 07:46:34 PM
Cheers for that guys!!!
Thanx 70XU1 for the vid, has easyed my concerns regarding the centre bearings.
Thanx Ed, checked out the Yella Terra site and it appears that they do sell spares.... Last few times I tried to check out that site it was under maintenance (for quite I while I thought), Hence why I didn't try looking earlier.

Thanx for all the help, will have a go and see how they turn out!

15  Technical Board / Modification Help / Rebuilding roller rockers...???? on: April 09, 2009, 03:59:17 PM
G'day All

I have recently got some Yella Terra roller rockers 2nd hand.
I don't have much experience with them. I noticed that there was a bit of play in the centre bearing of some of them and also with the end roller - the bit that contacts the valve, i'm not sure if this is usual as it doesn't seem to be consistent with all of them. I also noticed that there is what appears to be rust pitting on the end rollers of two of them, its a definite band what I would assume has resulted from being in contact with the top of the valve for ages (i.e. motor sitting) and rusting on the contact patch.

What I would like to know is can you rebuild roller rockers i.e. service centre bearings and the end rollers. They look like they could be pulled down. Has anyone done this? I will be sorely disappointed if this is not the case as I still paid a fair amount for the set (they aren't street terra's) and I know that the 'flaw' in the end roller like some of them have will lead to excessive wear and almost certain failure.... Otherwise the look very serviceable.

Sorry if I haven't used the correct terms for components; by centre bearing - I mean the big central bearing that the whole rocker pivots around and the end roller - the small roller that contacts on the top of the valve.

any help and info, no matter how general would be greatly appreciated!!!

Cheers

16  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: chev on: December 15, 2008, 04:19:07 PM
I had a chat with Kevin an engineer recommended to me by FB_MAD (Terry)
Was very helpful however confirmed what I had suspected that, No I could not have a 327 legally....
Could go with the option of using a different chassis and re-bodying it.... but not an fc any more.
Not the first engineer now that has given me that answer. I dont think I want to go down the re-bodying road anyways.

Will have to do some reading up on the different chev capacity combinations.... 5 litres and under....
Whats everyones favorite little chev???

Cheers
John

Cheers Fellas
Ill have a ring around and see if there is anyone who is willing to do a certificate/ tell me what they would like me to do for them to approve such modifications.
Hopefully ill have some luck!!!!

18  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: chev on: December 12, 2008, 06:07:09 PM
Cheers for that fellas!!!!
I have had a good look over those pages and the nsw one as well and it seems that 327 is just to big no matter how I calculate it.
I have used a weight of 1095kg for the ute and I think if anything it is slightly lighter than this which doesnt help my cause much at all! Undecided
Thanks heaps for the help.... guess the 327 powered ute will have to live on in my dreams Smiley

19  Technical Board / Modification Help / chev on: December 12, 2008, 04:14:57 PM
Is there anyway to put a 327 chev in an fc ute and legally register it in NSW?. Everything I have read seems to point to no but I was hoping maybe someone on here knew a way to do it....
