1  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Only getting reverse gear on: July 14, 2021, 09:28:53 PM
Wookie 66,
Check that the gear change rods are connected correctly at the gearbox end ie on the correct lever and the levers are in the correct position on the gear change shaft.

2  For Sale and Wanted / Parts Wanted / Re: Gearbox - 1st Gear and cluster wanted on: July 03, 2021, 09:10:59 PM
My two bobs worth Muddy,
I'm not a mechanic by any means but I do my own gearbox rebuilds for my Group Nb FC race car. A good quality single rear race is more than ample for a grey gearbox. If you are going to push it extremely hard the spacer between rear race and speedo drive is ok but not a necessity as you wont eliminate shaft movement. I make a  spacer between the rear race and recessed into an alloy rear housing to provide pre-load, but I am hard on gear boxes and usually weld the circlips in the syncro assembly and line bore the box and use an EH cluster gear and shaft.
If you have a reasonably good set of gears and good syncro drum and syncro rings, replaced front and rear bearings, no wear between main shaft and input shaft it will last you another twenty five years as a daily driver. I will see if I can attach a photo of the spacer it allows access to speedo drive and selector shaft.

The two ball bearings are probably for the indents on each of the selector shafts, grey box.

Just my two bobs worth Ken. I use the short ribbed ones in my FC race car, as I think they have a little more metal at the "bolted" end that I need. I turn the inside of the housing out to accept a support tube between the back of the rear race and the support in the housing.
Cheers Bill.

Harv,
try Billet Works, they make a complete collapsible bolt in for all earlies and you can keep the original steering box. you need to cut down the shaft and machine the end of it.

8  For Sale and Wanted / Parts Wanted / Re: inner door moisture seal plastic - or whatever they call them on: May 09, 2020, 09:53:32 PM
Helen,
If you have not already done so, when you make the plastic moisture seal and install it, seal the top and two sides and make a small slit in each corner at the bottom and tuck the bottom section inside the door. Do it in reverse and you can seal the bottom first and work your way up to the top.

Cheers

Harv, just as an aside :
We have a lovely older gentleman here in Tassie by the name of Trevor Grace who is probably the longest owner driver of a Racing Humpy in Tassie. He runs monoblock Amals on his grey and it really does go hard.

I am rebuilding a couple of grey motor crash gearboxes and having trouble finding any NOS or very good condition brass Syncro rings or Syncro cones. Does any one have a lead I can follow or have any they may sell

13  For Sale and Wanted / Parts Wanted / Re: 0.010" undersize camshaft? on: October 31, 2019, 09:06:07 AM
Rob I would suggest to use standard size cam bearings, but you may need to pay someone to install them correctly for you.

15  General / FE-FC Holden Nationals / Trailer hire/borrow for race car on: September 15, 2019, 09:54:27 PM
We are looking at transport arrangements at the moment for our trip to the Nationals from Tasmania.  The costs associated with the Spirit of Tasmania in bringing the race car over on a trailer along with a tow vehicle is getting a bit over the top.
Would any of a friends in Victoria have, or access to, a good quality car trailer with electric brakes that we could use whilst in Victoria for the Nationals and a week after.
We would trailer the car to Devonport, drive it onto the boat and then trailer it to the Nats.
Last time I drove the race car to the Nationals (WA) it didn't finish the "race" and came back to Tassie on the back of a truck.....don't want to do that again.

We are running in the Baskerville Historics Races meeting next weekend and hope we can keep it all in one piece.

Cheers

I think I will have a look at what you have suggested Ken I will pull down an FC box tomorrow and see what I need to machine up to connect to a collapsible column.

18  Technical Board / Modification Help / collapsible steering column on: August 30, 2019, 10:19:34 PM
I am building a modified FC 219 wagon (grey motor). It currently has Hr disk brake front end, FC standard column a steering box. I will need to install a collapsible steering column in accordance with VBS 14 for engineer approval. What collapsible column and box would be the simplest (and of course cheapest Grin) to adapt for the front end please.

20  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Electronic distributors on: July 23, 2019, 10:48:34 PM
I would be checking that the gear on the cam and the gear on the distributer are exactly the same cut, any slight difference to either will end with a bad result, you will ruin one or the other.
