1  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: repaint old N.S.W number plates on: January 14, 2007, 04:49:10 AM
Hi minifcvan,

I repainted the number plates on my HR a couple of years ago, it is a very tedious job. It took me about 3 weekends due to waiting for paint to dry etc, every letter, number, the NSW script and border have to be done individually.

The closest colour I found to the yellow is a Ford colour called 'Yellow Glow', used on early seventies Falcons. For black, well any old black will do. I then gave them a clear top coat to seal in the colours and preserve them a bit longer. Any auto parts shop should sell it or be able to order it for you, I think it was a Power Plus brand.

Infact, now that you can't get non reflective yellow plates from the RTA any more which we all want for our old original cars, it is still possible. If the letter/number combination is available, order them in the black background with white lettering (they still have NSW at the top), strip them and paint them yellow again. Then they still look like originals, although they are made out of a thinner metal but who will tell once they are on the car?
2  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: stencil under bonnet on: July 08, 2006, 08:09:27 AM
Hello Panelman,
I had my bonnet resprayed underneath to make it look noice and in the process lost the original stencil from the dealer.

It didn't take long to remake it, just carry a good camera around with you when you go to wreckers, swap meets and car shows etc. When you see these stencils under the bonnets of cars take a good clear picture then enlarge it to the size you want on a photocopier. Then cut out the lettering etc with a scalpal (from hobby shops, arts and crafts suppliers) tape it under your bonnet and spray away.

A good hint for authenticity is that all these stencils were not sprayed perfect, like your's. So, the quicker the job the better and it should look like it has been there for 50 years or so!

Hello,
I'm new here and just had to register to post a messege on this topic.

This book you bought is very very hard to come by. I know some people who have these books in their possession and I have only had the chance to quickley flick through.

The book was produced by the Fairfield Regional Museum (NSW) for the 50th ann of Holden and was compiled with local stories and pics of their Holdens in the area at the time. It is very interesting.

This book was in limited production and you cannot buy them new anymore. It was given out as a thankyou to those who displayed at an anniversary display at the museum in 1998. I have contacted the museum to buy one but they don't know anything about it anymore.

I would love to have one of my own but I think it has now turned into an Ebay must have.
