Technical Board / General Technical / Re: FE-FC Sedans "Real Weight"

Thanks for the feedback everyone & thank you Keith for that last number, I was thinking a real number would be somewhere around that area. So Long as the engineer I spoke to, thinks I can get a 304 5Lt into the FE, I guess I'm just gunna go with "his weights" & advice to accomplish the build. If he's willing & able to sign it off, then so be it.

Technical Board / General Technical / FE-FC Sedans "Real Weight"
|

Hi all, I was talking with a couple of VASS approved engineers the other day, about what is actually allowed these days, engine size wise. The first guy pointed me in the direction of, & to check out the "Vehicle Standards Bulletin 14 (VSB14)". Reading through there, I saw the table that is used to calculate engine size allowable, & it says; All vehicles originally weighing between 800kg and 1100kg / original mass x 4.0 = max.capacity in cc. All vehicles originally weighing more than 1100kg / original mass x 5.0 = max.capacity in cc. Now from everything I have come across both online & manuals & such, the FE-FC comes in around the 1080kg mark, which makes it apply to the rule of between 800kg & 1100kg, which if I'm wanting to fit a 5lt, it wouldn't be allowed. But after speaking to the second engineer, while talking to him, he was looking online at FE's & FC's just so he was clear on which model I was talking about, & also spoke of the same formula as to working out engine capacity, he then said he had done work on a FC before where a 350 chev had been fitted, & looked at his records on it. He then told me that, although that car had fallen into between the 800kg - 1100kg, he said those figures were basicly only "Rough Estimates & Not Exact Figures!" What he did was, he got someone with a complete original driving FC & had them put it over a weighbridge, which gave him a weight of 1140kg. So from that he was able to apply the second rule of weighing more than 1100kg / orig. mass x5, which meant he could approve the 350. So what I am REALLLLLLY hoping for, is if someone who has a driving stocker out there, could get or has a "REAL" weight from a weighbridge, & to let me know what it exactly is? I'm guessing there would be slight variations in weight from car to car, depending on things like tyres, rims or even spare wheels & jacks in car maybe. But I would love to see or hear from a few people to see how much of a varying weight there really is between stock vehicles & to see if they are closer to the 1140 kg mark. As it stands at the moment, I'm liking what this second engineer is saying to me & will probably go with him . Cheers all, Moon.

I am after a pair of FE-EJ front end top mounting plates, (see pics below) as I want to grapht them onto a torana front end for mounting into my FE. I'm hoping someone might have an old front end they don't need & could get the blighters off for me. (At a reasonable price of course!) Obtained reference pics from brett_f long ago, thanks brett.

Hi all, I have been a member of the forum for years, but have not been active in here since sometime in 2012. This was due to "RELUCTANTLY" selling off my FC Special, and also after a time, forgetting my login details I've been into Ratrods in these missing years away, But lately have had the bug/craving again for my FC, and after perusing the net looking at all manner of FE-FC pics, it became to much & I just had to give into the "URGE"! So I contacted the guy who bought my old FC (a local & friend of mine) & put it to him, the dilemma I was in, & asked if he would consider selling it back to me? I gave him my offer & he was surprised but understood where I was coming from & said, he would talk it over with his wife & have a good think about it & let me know. So over the past weekend I tried to call him a few times but just couldn't reach him, & as yet still no word. On Sunday evening I decided to go & visit another friend/kind of family member, because I knew he had an FE sedan that he had had for ABSOLUTE YEARS, I just wanted to lay eyes on the old girl to see what condition it was in. Now he has had many people over the years try to buy it from him, but he never let it go, hoping to do something with it at some stage, but of course never getting to it. So I turn up & tell him the reason why I'm out to see him, & ask if I can see the old girl. He takes me out to his shed and as soon as I saw it I thought to myself, "this is my first ever barn find!" After a good look over it, I couldn't believe how good it was as far as rust goes. I could see it had some in the front floors but not to bad really, & that was about it. All the usual places were great! Now I must admit, I did have an earlier conversation with both this guy & his wife a couple of months ago at a funeral wake about this car, & as I already knew, he didn't really want to let it go but his wife told me she had been at him for a while to sell it. So back to day at hand, having this "insider knowledge" after some discussion about it, I told him how I regret selling off mine & was mad to get another & asked if he would consider selling it. He um'ed & er'ed for a few seconds, then told me "look, yeah I would, only because I know you & I know you're gonna do something with it. I loved seeing your old FC getting around & I know you'll get around in this one!" That was it, I had to get this I thought. I asked him how much he was asking for it & he told me the offer he had from the last guy a few years ago. I made an offer which was cheaper, & again he said "only because it's you, yep, no worries!" I don't know who was happier, Me, him or his wife? lol. No, definately his wife was the happiest, because when he told her it was going she threw her hands up in the air & yelled "Woo Hoo!" Lol So that was it, the deal was done on Sunday evening, it was paid for & delivered to my place today Monday. It has sat in his current place for the last 18 years plus more at his old place. It's got some "rugged" home mods from back in the day when he was young, fitting red motors, but nothing that can't be prettied up. He threw in what ever bits & pieces he could find plus a 186 & 202 that is still at his place but can sit there for as long as I like. It's got HR front end & rear, no motor or gearbox in it but that's fine coz now I got to work out just exactly what I want to put in her. Plan is just to leave the old paint job as it is, clean her up get her in working order again & enjoy her. Anyway, time for pics I guess.....

Howdy all, been ages since I logged in and posted anything, but I'm always checking in to see whats going on in here. Thought this area had been quiet for long enough so thought I'd put in a few ideas i've been playing around with. Hope you like 'em, Cheers, Moon. How about a pillarless coupe? Aonther tonner I have a badly rusted FE body and it got me to thinking, with all of these types of "To Far Gone Bodies" surely something could be done to put them to good use? And so I give you the Rat Rod FE/FC's. LOL

Good on ya customholden for both thinking outside the box and havin a crack at it . Doesnt matter what you do, you'll always come across nay sayers in life, and if we all listened to 'em, life wouldn't be worth living! So what if ya build doesn't come to fruition, it's yours and so long as you have fun playing with it, well in my books that's the main thing . Now I got a similar build on the back burner been happening for a while, ( not even sure it will continue in same direction yet ) but haven't said a thing about it as, although there is so much GREAT WONDEROUS HELPFUL PEOPLE and INFO in here (which is truly a credit), some people are very quick to jump on the negativity bandwagon and seem to enjoy dampening others creative spirits. Anyway customholden, this is the way I went, got a running VN commodore (drove it for 2 weeks till rego ran out ) for $150, then cut the thing to pieces . Cut it down so I had all the front still with motor in it and floor pan, then put FC sedan shell over top. Wasn't bloody easy by myself that's for sure, but at moment all is sitting as it should, just recently took motor out so I can work out next plan of attack for matching together the firewalls. I have some pics on my phone, but have updated my pc & now have to get phone software working so I can get the pics on here, will put them on soon as I can for you to see. Here's the only pic I have at moment on my pc of what I did to the VN. By the way, for those people who think it's a sin for what I've done to the FC, you don't realise just how BADLY RUSTED this body was, so way I see it I'm saving it through organ donation . Cheers all, Moon.

Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: ECOTEC WITH TORANA FRONT END INFO NEEDED
|
on: February 16, 2011, 10:20:28 PM
|
One thing I have learned through this topic is some technical terms such as "angle pointer thing" and "circle centre finder thingo" . But seriously, thanks for the input guys, much appreciated. Hrpremier- I have read the topic on "Injected V8 again" and have been lucky enough to meet with Brett a few years ago, it was this build that gave me the inspiration to do the torana front. As Ed has also shown, a guy in the FB-EK forum did an AWSOME EK 350 build using the torana front end. Between those two topics, I printed out a heap of pics and have been using them as my recipe to follow so to speak. I am already into it, have stepped out crossmember, but at moment am having trouble working out actual location of the FC subframe mount plates to the front end. They seem to sit a fair way forward, and looks like you only use the front holes for mounting. Got to get this right or the wheels aren't going to look in the right spot. I'll try an get in touch with Brett and V8EK4us, hopefuly the can give me an actual measurement. Havn't got any pics of it yet, but when I do I will post 'em up. Thanks again for the input guys, it all helps & is ALWAYS welcome! Cheers, Moon.
