Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Gearbox Overhaul

Mike, I had my gearbox reconditioned in S.A. for $350 last November by a gearbox specialist. $600 sounds pretty steep. Sadly, he has just retired but he might do the old g/boxes. If you need a contact number reply to this. By the way Rare Spares does a recond kit for roughly $120 .

Technical Board / General Technical / Sticky Gear Change
on: March 08, 2009, 06:28:55 PM

Hello everyone, Oil types aside, what would someones best guess as to why I am having trouble changing from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 2nd in my FE. The gearbox has been rebuilt, the linkages repaired, and has new trunnion rubbers.
I am using Penrite Manual Gear Oil 80 (SAE 80W-85) API GL4. I did read the recent topic on this but I dont believe it!!!

Technical Board / General Technical / Bosch vs. Lucas Headlamps
on: March 08, 2009, 06:16:24 PM
Hi All, It seems most FE's and FC's have Lucas headlamps rather than Bosch. Why is this so? Or is it so? Why were the 2 types available? My curiosity has got the better of me. Help!!!
P.S. Lucas globes cost $2.50, while the Bosch ones around $23.00

Technical Board / Restoration Help / 56 OR 57 FE?
on: June 11, 2008, 05:34:04 PM
I'm trying to work out whether my FE is a 56 or 57 model. I'm not sure that the engine is original (it indicates Feb 57). The body no. is 18830-A. I can't find a chassis no. on the inner guards. Also, the exterior is Cabot Grey and is listed on the compliance plate, but the interior 2 tone colours are not. They are pale cream/ivory and a deep burgundy. Any ideas anyone? The trim is Parchment Ivory and Fall Red.

Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Boot Hinge Removal
on: February 27, 2008, 08:16:59 PM
John, I have replaced a boot spring post recently with the newly made screw up type post available through the Vic. club I believe. It works well, and is easy to tension. It was not easy to remove the old post. I had to make a brass bush because the new post is a much smaller diameter than the original (late 59 FC) If you need more info let me know.

Technical Board / General Technical / Cant get tyres
on: February 27, 2008, 08:08:10 PM

I've tried to get 185 x 75 x 13 tyres for my FC as most of our club members have. They are not made any more. What are people using for stock vehicles?

For Sale and Wanted / Reproduction Parts / Re: Adjustable Boot Spring Posts
on: January 28, 2008, 02:56:21 PM
I've just recently installed one new post. It works well and is easy to adjust. However, it was very hard to get the old post out as it didn't break as suggested. I felt the post was too short as the spring hung over it a little, and the thread length could be 5mm longer too. (There was a 6mm spacer welded on the "chassis" so I had to file it down to fit the new nut) I made a brass bush to take up the slack between the 12.5mm post and 16mm hole in the rod. (works well) My original post was 16mm in diameter not 12.5 like the new one. I have a late 59 model.
I may explain this in more detail later.
