Technical Board / General Technical / Carbi Question

Hi All, I am in the process of rebuilding an EJ motor for my FE I'm fairly sure it will come back from the machine shop with a bore of 3.125. I am planning to use the standard cam and my question is what jet sizes to use in my standard Stomberg? Thank Doug

For Sale and Wanted / Parts Wanted / Re: Holden Piston Rings
on: May 09, 2021, 10:07:28 PM
Hi Vern,
I have weighed the holden pistons and they are all within six grams, I also weighed the conrods and they were within a nine gram range. There is no discernible ring ridge but I have decided to go with all new pistons and rings. The size will depend on the machine shop once they have run the micrometer over it. Doug

I have done as Rob suggested and, as Muphy's Law would have it, the Repco piston is 20 grams lighter so will need to lighten the other five if I can get away with just honing the bores.

For Sale and Wanted / Parts Wanted / Holden Piston Rings
on: May 03, 2021, 01:25:30 PM
Hi All, does anyone know if original Holden type piston ring sets are still available? I have just pulled down a J series motor that has 0.040 oversize Holden pistons (P/N 7406474) fitted that I would like to re-use if possible. As a point of interest, the pistons only have the part number on the crown and a cast hole (dimple) to indicate the front of the piston, no other markings to indicate oversize. The engine also had one Repco piston fitted in pot six, interestingly it had the same Holden rings fitted not Repco rings, this piston has no markings on the crown and has a cast notch to indicate the front. The inside of the skirt has castings Repco, ACL and the number 319.

Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Original fuel sender unit
on: April 07, 2021, 11:49:55 AM
Hi Wookie 66, first thing to check is if the wires to the back of the fuel gauge are on the right sides, change them over and gauge should operate correctly. If this doesn't fix the problem then remove the sender unit from the tank, earth it to the frame and with the wire connected operate the float lever to see if the gauge needle moves in order the confirm correct operate of the sender and if sender wire is not shorted out. If nothing happens other than the needle sitting on the full mark then check wire from the gauge to the sender for continuity. Hope this helps Doug

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: FE Rear Indicators
on: March 10, 2021, 05:28:33 PM

Hi Muzzie, what you have described is the way FE-FC rear indicators normally work unless you have tried to utilize the lower lamp holders, in which case what you have described would still occur unless you fitted a FB light switch and directional switch. To my knowledge the lower lamp holders were only for the optional reversing lamps.

Thanks for info on the gear knob Rob, it pays to learn something new every day. What gear knob was used on the FE? I'm not sure if later FEs were sold with rear quarter wind splitters either. Regards Doug

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Grey Motor Water Pump
on: November 16, 2020, 11:22:57 AM
Hi Papabear56, I had a spare red motor water pump and tried to dismantle it but could not get the seal out without damaging it, couldn't get close enough to the edge. When I did get it out I found that it was about an 1/8 of an inch higher than grey motor seal. I was able to locate a seal manufacturer, 'TLANMP', online who have an equivalent red motor seal, part number FB-16. Company is out of China via Singapore and were very good in keeping me informed on the progress of my order. Brought 5 for $22 US, about $30.00. I needed to reduce the depth of the impeller boss in order to compensate for the higher seal, local auto repair shop was able to lathe it down to 0.590 thou (about 19/32 in). A little tricky installing the bearing as it tends to grab the seal on the way through so had to install shaft in stages and tap seal down so as not to damage it. End result was a functioning water pump. Regards Doug

Hi, I did a full bare metal rebuild on my FE and used 'Car Builders' products, https://www.carbuilders.com.au/sounddeadener. No need to paint first, I just applied rust converter/de-oxydiser before installing sound deadening adhesive sheets. I also used the sheets in the doors and rear quarters. Great stuff to work with, I also used their water proof underlay under my carpet as insurance. Regards Doug

Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Different sized brake shoe adjuster screws
on: October 05, 2020, 06:16:34 PM
Thanks Rob, I have had a closer look following your comments and would agree that the larger elliptical (oval) head adjuster is cast and the smaller round head adjusters could be machined, hard to tell with all the years of rust. Another odd thing is that some of the small head adjusters have a rounded edge at the back just before the thread and some do not, that is to say, they have a sharp edge. I'll put it down to an engineering change at some point.

Technical Board / General Technical / Different sized brake shoe adjuster screws
on: October 05, 2020, 04:05:42 PM
Another question for the wise, I have two different sized brake adjuster screws, some with a round head 5/8 inch in diameter and some with an elliptical head 11/16 inch wide by 13/16 inch long. Which wheel cylinder adjuster covers were fitted with which adjuster screws i.e. smaller adjuster for rear cylinders and larger adjusters for front cylinders, or was there a design change at some point?

Technical Board / Restoration Help / Grey Motor Side Plate Types
on: October 04, 2020, 03:52:17 PM
Can anyone shed light on which side plates was fitted to which grey motors? I have three different configurations, one with the coil mount situated between 4 and 5 and a 'bump' in the metal between 3 and 4, second with the coil mount between 3 and 4 above the 'bump' and the last with the coil mount lower down between 3 and 4 (closer to 4) on the raised section and with out the 'bump'.
