I have a J series block that has been left in the weather and as a result rust has formed on the top deck, luckily it was stored upside down with the sump in place. My question is, how many thou can be shaved off before it becomes untenable to use? Doug

Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Front r/h brake grabbing

Hi Vern, should your brakes become less effective over time I would be looking at the brake hoses in the first instance as the inner lining swells and restricts flow. Just a thought on the grabbing brake issue, has the front end been removed and if so, could components i.e. spacers been put back together in different locations? The reason I ask is this effects the caster angle on either side of the vehicle resulting in different forces at play on each wheel.

Just on the last point from Vern, I have had Dow Corning silicone brake fluid in my FE since 1988 and never had any issues, as it is not hydroscopic it has never been changed. I believe it is now marketed as Dot 5 for motorcycles. In order to use it you would have to replace all your rubber components and give your brake lines a good flush with metho as the silicone fluid reacts with any rubber that has been in contact with standard brake fluid and makes them swell. Worth considering.

Here's my two cents worth. Have you put the metal contact disc in the right way round? convex towards the driver.
If you have access to the NASCO Accelerator magazines check out Vol 14 No.2 (Mar 1957) pages 12 and 14 for details on horn adjustment and horn ring adjustment procedures. Also look at the article in Vol 16 No.9 (Oct 1959) regarding Kontak Fix lubricant.

Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Grey motor harmonic balancer
|

A few questions first. What type of balancer is it, original one with the large metal plate and threaded centre or the replacement one with the three threaded holes? When you replaced the timing cover seal did you lubricate the seal with grease prior to installing the balancer? Was there any evidence of a wear ring/grove on the sealing surface of the balancer? Are you sure it is oil and not residue from the balancer rubber degrading?
If the balancer is the original type is there any movement of the large metal disc, with the fan belt still connected grab the disc and feel for any rotary or lateral movement.

Rob,
Thanks for the insight about the breaker plates.
I have had a think about the vac adv units, could the one in the centre have been supplied with the German imported "Black" distributors?

Thanks Rob for your comments, I went back to take photos of the vac adv assys and identified another style of breaker plate, see image below, it is similar to the one on the right in the original post but lacks the points adjusting knobs, yet another twist. ![](https://i.imgur.com/HzvtANtm.jpg) These are the three different vac adv assys I have, the one on the left I assume is from an EJ, the middle one possibly FB or EK and the one on the right FX through to FC. ![](https://i.imgur.com/EWtS6pZm.jpg) , ![](https://i.imgur.com/c5kTLwQm.jpg) , ![](https://i.imgur.com/oZfGu9Rm.jpg)

I also noted that there are at least three different vacuum advance assemblies. I have one with a downward facing tube, I assume for EJ, one the same shape as the EJ but no tube, I assume FB or EK, and remainder are more bulbous and are for 132 motors. Can anyone shed any light on which distributors had which? Doug

Technical Board / General Technical / Distributor Question
|
on: July 11, 2021, 01:10:44 PM
|
One for the Brains Trust, I was sorting through my spare grey motor distributors in order to refurbish one for my rebuilt J series engine only to become rather confused when I found different breaker plates fitted to my two U-VJU 6 BR 54 distributors. See images below. ![](https://i.imgur.com/ssuHjkjl.jpg) As far as I am aware the breaker plate on the right is the one used for all U-VJU 6 BR 30 to 54 distributors. Given that the breaker plate on the left fits into the U-VJU 6 BR 54 housing could it be from a FX or FJ dissy? There were a couple of other anomalies with that dissy which leads me to believe it was rebuilt using odd bits and pieces. Any ideas as to the origin of the breaker plate would be appreciated. Doug

Technical Board / General Technical / Grey Motor Harmonic Balancer Installation
|
on: June 27, 2021, 02:53:27 PM
|
Hi All, I am in the final stages of re-assembling my grey motor and have been unable to find any specification regarding how far the harmonic balancer needs to be pressed onto the crank. I have the original type balancer and assume its' final resting position is with the end of the balancer thread inline with the front of the crank. My question is, is there a specific specification or is near enough good enough? Thanks Doug

Hi all, does anyone know why grey motor sumps have different marking stamped into the bottom of the pan? I have two with an 'E' and one with an 'O' and would like to know which one to fit to my J series motor. Thanks Doug

If you are using an old pedal assembly check that the pivot pin housing hole hasn't elongated, any wear at that point drastically effects both the smooth operation of the linkage and the amount of movement at the carbi. Doug

Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Reinstalling the bonnet emblem
|
on: May 22, 2021, 09:05:22 AM
|
I am pretty sure you are missing the two threaded rods that screw into the threaded holes on either side of the emblem. Once they are in place the retaining plates (shown in your picture) are placed over them and secured with nuts, this holds the emblem in place. The threaded rods need to be long enough to protrude through the bonnet in order to secure the assembly to the bonnet using two additional nuts. Hope this makes sense. Regards Doug

Technical Board / General Technical / Re: revisions to timing gear cover?
|
on: May 21, 2021, 04:13:37 PM
|
Hello Brains Trust, I was looking for information on timing covers and came across this post which answered some of my questions; however, I have a couple more I hope you can help me with. I have what I am assuming is a later EJ cover as it has only the one 1/4 inch hex head bolt hole but it is different to all my other covers in that it has a cross pressing, my question is did Holden change the timing cover pressing when they enlarged the hole? Secondly I have two different timing cover seals, both Holden part numbers 7412742 which is a single lip seal that sits fairly flush with the cover and 7426199 which has the additional felt seal, my question which engines had which seals? Thanks Doug
