Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Losing Charge
on: March 12, 2004, 03:37:44 PM
I read some where not to use welding cable as battery cable because it is made of different materal or has a higher resistance not allowing current to flow properly. Does the GEN light come ON before you start the engine? If not the alternator won't charge. With the engine running switch on the head lights and rev the engine. The lights should get brighter. This indicates the alternator is charging.(use voltmeter if you can get one)Charge rate should be about 14 volts at fast idle. If battery is charged, turn ON headlights and crank engine. If lights dim out and engine does'nt start, the battery is stuffed. Or remove the vent caps on the battery(WEAR SAFETY GLASSES) and with some one cranking the engine, look at the cells(TAKING CARE NOT TO INHALE THE BATTERY GASES) if the cells bubble or fizz the battery is stuffed. If using a volt meter the voltage should not drop below 9.50 volts while cranking. Is there any drain from acc or lights when car is parked? ie- boot light, radio. Hope this helps.

Technical Board / General Technical / Re: MAXIMUM WIDTH FOR TYRES

G'Day Spinner, The rear tyre side wall scrapes a little on the rear inner wheel arch lip. It leaves a slight mark on the side wall, nothing to worry about. You can go to the next tyre size down or grind about 3 mm of the inner rear lip.

During my apprentiship in the early 80's a different type of clip was used. It was rectangle in shape, usually green or black in colour and fitted to FB right through to HR and LC/LJ Torana.

Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Almost O/T: MAT sensor fitting?
on: February 21, 2004, 03:26:12 PM
The Toyota's have the MAT sensor in the air cleaner box after the filter. They must be doing something right because their EFI system rarely fails from what i have experienced. If its fitted to the manifold i would think it could be subject to damage from engine backfire (being closer to the flame front), or contaminated by fuel and or oil . If the MAT sensor is originally fitted to the manifold intake runner i would do the same to the new manifold. What set up have you got ? I can check up on some tech manuals.

Would be interested to know what the body changes were between the FE and FC . Were the FC's built better ![Grin](http://fefcholden.org.au/forum/Smileys/default/grin.gif) , there seems to be more on the road than FE's. FE's are very rare in WA. Is it like comparing the HD and HR?, don't see many HD's. VB commodores, where are they? VN's are starting to get thin as well. Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: SEAT BELT ANCHORAGE POINTS ???
on: January 23, 2004, 05:06:09 PM
Hey Mark, If the car is still registered i would fit the metal buckels, just for the look's, but think of the damage it can cause you should you have an accident. You can fit lap/sash or retractable belts. If car is to go over the Pit's, only new belts are acceptable. (new belts out of a wreck will not comply). There are certain measurements to comply with, eg:- height of mounting point on "B" Pillar so belt does'nt rub on your neck or worst still, break your neck when braking hard. The Technical Section at the Licensing Division have the info on the mounting points and the way they have to be mounted and the grade of bolts to be used etc, etc. The man to speak to is Dennis Forte, 2 Murray Road South, Welshpool 6106. Phone (08) 9351 1680. Fax (08) 9351 1689. You can buy the seat belt kits from Coventry's or Repco as a universal kit or as a replacement for a existing model. Take note of the stalk buckle that is mounted to the centre floor for the front seats as they have to be long enough when the seats are in their most forward position and if you are fitting a bench seat your better off mounting a buckle on a belt web rather than on a cable stalk. Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Car on blocks 6 yrs

Change eng oil and oil filter. Fill oil filter with oil and screw in place. Remove spark plugs check for any rust in cylinder's, if ok squirt oil in cylinders with oil can and rotate engine by hand. Replace fuel. Refit spark plugs. Check cooling system/flush. Alloy parts will show signs of corrosion. Start engine (no high rpm's) and once oil smoke clear's from exhaust slowly squirt oil down carby to lube top end. Check for any fuel leaks as carby and fuel pump seals can dry out. Flush brake fluid but don't pump the brake pedal, you may tear the seals in the master cylinder. Check trans and diff oil. If it's a manual gear box the clutch plate could be rusted to the fly wheel' so don't start in gear with foot on clutch because the car will still move. Rotate/spin wheels, brakes could be rusted to disc's/drums. You may have to replace tyres. (old age) Hope this helps. Regards Seb ![Smiley](http://fefcholden.org.au/forum/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

General / General Board / I D this FC please.
on: November 26, 2003, 02:07:04 PM
G'Day all, could someone please I D this FC for me (build date, colour etc). FC 225-6984-A Trim 258-635 Paint 256-2158 RPO 253-6258 TOP (blank) Chassis # 8-4950-P Engine # B297446 I know it's a Special and assembled in Perth. It's main colour is pale yellow with black flash and black rear end (boot and beaver panel). It has the chrome vertical trim below the tail lights but no horizontal trim at the C pillar to seperate the yellow roof and black quarter panel. The interior trim still looks original, top of seats is black and the main back rest and base of seat is a faded maroon. The hood linning looks faded and may have been a pale yellow or white/cream. The lacing is black. The door trim is maroon with black top section,it has front arm rests but no pull handles. The main dash is pale yellow and inside of doors is black except the forward section below the front 1/4 window which is pale yellow. This car has been painted in the past and the new owner would like to know it's I D before he sells it. He took the car as payment for a job he did on a house when his client did not pay up. When i get more details and inspect the car i will put it on the Forum. Regards Seb ![Cheesy](http://fefcholden.org.au/forum/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif)
