Title: Steering Column Leak at Tube
Post by: oldgrey58 on February 13, 2021, 03:08:13 PM
Hi all,

I'd like you opinion on whether i should fix this oil leak.

I fitted a reconditioned steering column/box to my FC some time ago. No motor yet so it's had minimal use.

I saw recently that there was a slight weep of oil where the tube goes into the steering box. I checked the oil level according to the manual and it has 2 1/2 inches of oil measured through the lower cover plate bolt hole. The manual advises a minimum of 1 1/2 inches.

Is it OK for oil to weep at the tube? Or should that be sealed? I assume it will stop leaking once the oil level drops below the tube.

Thanks

Yes, it's OK for oil to leak at the gearshift tube.  An oil leak is better than a lubrication failure . . .

Get a syringe and suck out the oil until you have the level right and then it won’t leak. Either that or keep cleaning it of until it finds its level.

My old FE sedan I drove from the late 70's until the late 90's had a grease nipple tapped into [through] the plug so you could use a grease gun to fill it .

Thank you everyone. I'll put it on the watch and see list.

Did this mod to my EK sedan in the same era Haydn. On the advice of my mates dad, old bush mech. With the latest car I just opened the plug and pumped grease straight in.
