Title: Rough Drawing
Post by: mc54 on October 23, 2010, 07:49:14 PM

I think it is about time I went back to my roots. With that in mind, here is a rough drawing for a oil painting I plan on doing.

I do mean rough, there is still no faces or background, the rear window is wrong as well as many other things but it is a starting point.

It has been a long time so I know that there will be lots of problems along the way.

I will add to this post when I have done the under painting, monochromatic, in french ultramarine blue I think.

Regards
Mike

Well if that is rough then the final finished product is going to be awsome and if they come up for sale i will be interested

excellent! I am a sucker for good art like this - if you get it finished to how you like it, consider doing a number of lithographs and selling them - I would be up for the original or a limited copy myself.

Thank you all for the kind words.
I will see what I can do and my next post will hopefully be the underpainting.
It has been many years since I really tried to do anything.

To keep myself motivated I am going to try to post an update once a week until it is finished. So, while the underpainting is not completed, here is my post this week of where I am at.

For those that don't know, the underpainting is there to work out your light and shadow without the distraction of colour. It is also the best time to correct mistakes. The colour of the underpainting will also determine the overall feel of the final painting as it will show through.

Mike

Looking good Mike, I think the front number plate eyebrow is reserved for the FE, although you occasionaly see them fitted to FC front

Mike,

Like everyone else I am amazed at how good your artwork is.  But, and it is not meant as a criticism, and it may be only me - can I ask - Is the little girl too little?  Perspective is obviously in the eye of the beholder and to me she seems too small. I am happy to have everyone tell me I'm wrong.  I'd just hate to get to the end of something that is obviously of such high quality and never have anyone ask me that question if it was bugging them.

As I say - I love your work and am happy to be wrong.

Cheers
David

PS - I can't draw to save my life!!

Thanks for all the comments and support.

David your question is a good one. I have looked it up and the average 3 year old is around 33 inches or 83 centimeters. Bear in mind this is the average height, some are taller some are shorter. I cannot measure the height from the floor to the stainless strip on my car as I no longer own it. So, having just blocked in the girls head. Is she too small? She isn't standing straight so that would make her a little taller. What are your opinions. I would like to hear them.

I am not really happy with the little girl anyway, so I was thinking of replacing her. I would be nice to have her the right size.

Regards
Mike

Hi Mike ,love your work.
As a reference at the centre of the front wheel arch, the centre of the guard spear is about 28 and1/2 inches above the ground.
Hope this puts you in perspective :D Cheers Jeff.

Fantastic work.  Can't wait to see the end result.

My initial reaction regarding the girl is that she is a bit too small in relation to the car.  However, if this picture is in the spirit of the Holden advertisments of the time, then no problem... Mr Linklater and co (who did most of the pics for GMH) made a point of having 'little people' near the cars to help overstate the size of the all new Holden.

Personally, I'd try to make her a 'bit' bigger.  I'd keep her though, it is a fantastic original idea, and I'll line up for a print. :o

At 3, standing upright, my daughters head was just below the door handle.
She is tall for her age though.
To me, that child would look about 2 1/2 on average.
Still old enough to get into that kind of mischief.....I have a few walls in my home to prove it.
I say if you leave her alone, it would work out OK.

Alex

If I was going to be a really picky bastard, I'd say make the rego label on the windscreen one from the 1950s or 60s, not the computer printed ones of today (which I think you have in the picture at present).

I wish I was so talented that the only thing a bloke could comment on about my car drawing was the bloody rego label! :o

Thanks for all the input.
I have changed the little girl, I guess the size is about right. I know the legs and feet are wrong but I still don't like her.
I think this week I will try a combination of the two and see how that comes out.

One day I will get it right.

Mike

Title: Re: Rough Drawing
Post by: mc54 on November 14, 2010, 04:51:23 PM

I had a piece of spare canvas board so I painted the girl again, not with too much detail but enough to get the idea, this time combining the two. I have then added to the original painting using photoshop. A hell of a lot easier than continuously paint one girl over the other.I think I will give this one a go. Although the idea of a young boy with a hammer is a good one.

Hi Wayne,

I'm afraid there is no plans on doing a painting of the FE. Fine motor vehicle that it is. This is in memory of my FC that I just sold. Something to remember it by that is a little more personal than a photograph.

Charlie Boozer is the nickname of one of the NSW Club Members ($2), who is blessed with 4 daughters. You'd travel a long way to meet a nicer bloke.

It is really looking good - I can see the trouble you're having with the child and the shadow line etc, but when you get it right it will just slap you in the face.

Hey all

This is going to be the last post on this one for a while. I changed the girl again and I am still not the least bit happy with it.

This girl is coming out and I will find another one to put in. I am moving to Queensland next month and I have a great niece who is 3 years old.
Maybe I can get her to pose. Maybe.

Take Care
Mike

I appreciate the input and comments from everyone. We all look at things differently and I can use all the help I can get.
The girl does need to be in shadow, I would have taken care of that once I was happy with the way she looked. But.......
Since I don't like her - she is going to be painted over.

The dog idea may be in, but I am going to try something else first

Once again, thanks.
