Hi Glen M.

Great to see your pics posted.

Last time I saw that car it was here in Cairns and in one piece. Has not taken you long to get stuck into it though.

Looks like you've got yourself well on the way to getting it back on the road.

Hi Glenn - without stating the bleedin' obvious, what's there not to like about a windowless FE van!  ::) ;D  Looks very nice and I'm sure you'll get plenty more enjoyment from it. Oh, yeah and the number plate position looks much better!  ;) :D Cheers

Wheels are dragway. Tyres 225/50/16 rear 205/45/16 front.
                    Cheers Glenn

Title: Re: Glenn_M's Van
Post by: mcl1959 on January 11, 2010, 09:12:20 AM
The rims are not traditional dragway wheels though are they - I think from memory they are a Commodore pattern rim called dragway which imitates the old style dragway rim.
I'm not 100% sure about my memory because it's a while since I saw the van.

Is that right Glenn?

Ken

I always thought they were Dragway billet wheels  ???

Yes, they are dragway billets, not the older style dragways.

Glenn,

I have had a rethink after seeing more photo's of your car, I wouldn't want to see it in the flesh, I would be dribbling all over it and I would hate to make a mess of that lovely paintwork. (Maybe if I wear a bib?)

That car looks superb, all jokes aside, i can't wait to see it.

Keith

Hi, it,s a hr frontend with a c.r.s. conversion kit. (front mounted rack with a crap turning circle) Hopper stopper adaptor kit for vt rotors and calipers. These were already fitted. (Jason may correct any mistakes I may have made) Hope this helps.
                            Cheers Glenn

Title: Re: Glenn_M's Van
Post by: ubeuty on January 15, 2010, 06:39:25 PM
That is the same front end I have and I thought it would have a shit turning once I fitted it, what about that other front end by I think v6 conversions might make it better. Might email Hoppers for price on VT bits as already have rotors and calipers.

Title: Re: Glenn_M's Van
Post by: GM on January 16, 2010, 08:32:47 AM
V6 conversions have a really good front end if you have a lazy $5k. I'm not sure what I'll end up doing with mine, you do get used to it.
                          Cheers Glenn

ok so dumb question here - and I know and appreciate full well that photos can be very misleading (and I wish we could get our van's paint and body re-done too :-\)  but what was actually wrong with the paint?  Or was it just time for a freshen up?

Title: Re: Glenn_M's Van
Post by: GM on February 17, 2010, 04:46:01 PM
I am being a little fussy but decided to finish it all. A few spots around the vents and top parts near the roof the paint was bridging. The drivers door had some minor blisters, could only see them in the right light. I was going to just drive it for a while and do it later, but I would rather see it all done.

Here is a  picture of one spots near the roof I broke off.

ok! I understand fully - especially if it's your main fun car!  As much as it would be nice to do our van's paint and body it'll be driven for a while with it's warts and all paint and body - but - we do have another major project on the go. Look forward to meeting you and seeing your van at Orange  :)

Thing of the past now and far from cost effective in the industry, the new ones are great (spot weld and pull the dent in one) and they also heat shrink at the same time.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product Glenn, have enjoyed the pics so far.

Vacuum off all the old crusty stuff.

Had heaps of trouble getting the contact to spray

Geez mate, i remember that all going on nice new fresh stuff... but hang on that was nearly 8 years ago!!  :o :o

Its amazing how the heat has a huge effect on the foam.

I also remember the pieces in the vent, was so that any water that go into the car when either washing or heavy rain would simple go straight through... looks like that area is still ok.

Not much else left to do now mate??

Have fun in Orange mate..

Just one little bit of constructive criticism though; shouldn't the dog with the red eyes that light up when you apply the brakes be mounted inside the rear window?

Be careful mate, when the springs sagged previously, it looked the goods but scrapped when cornering, you can see the effects on the inside of the guards.

Only drove it home about 10kms, no rubbing issues yet but it would rub if it went lower.  I reckon your ute would look great in MY garage Jason, finish it first but. (painted wildberry of course)

Hi

Just read your thread.....great work.

Is that a series 1 or 2 V6 and is that a standard bracket to run the AC compressor there, or did you get it made up ?

Are your back wells tubbed at all for those wheels ?

Cheers

Glenn,
What a beautiful van your high standards have achieved.
The new carpet really sets of that magnificent paint colour, great choices.

No tubs, motor was in it when I purchased the car. Out of a VT commodore. Jb  may have some input here as he did the conversion

Title: Re: Glenn_M's Van
Post by: JB on February 14, 2014, 09:10:37 PM
From memory, it was a second gen v6 out of a standard 98 VT commodore. Good motor with 55,000kms

The air cond bracket had to be made to suit as there wasn't room in the original position, and the coils were swapped from the front of the motor to mount near the gearbox for more room for the compressor. At the time nearly everyone said that A/C was impossible... But being a Cairns car it was essential.

The tubs are standard, with standard lips etc, dragway rims 16x8 I think and 225 tyres.

It was and still is a pretty good rig.

Cheers
JB

Had a lot of people tell me the same about mine too (except JB that egged me on!) or said that I was just plane crazy for certain aspects of it, especially a full wire harness transplant from the VT (which gives me all the cruise, power windows, central lock ect) or that a V8 was impossible as people have only done the V6 stuff. Look how many of us are doing EFI V8's now....

Title: Re: Glenn_M's Van
Post by: NES304 on February 15, 2014, 12:01:37 PM
Ps Glen, did you know all the engine plugs are identical to the 5L V8? And if Jb used the V6 conversions mounts the V8 mounts may line up perfectly as it did in mine!

Then supercharge!

Title: Re: Glenn_M's Van
Post by: JB on July 11, 2014, 08:33:47 AM
To put a v8 in there the way it is set up would mean losing the air cond if you didn't severely recess the firewall, as you would lose the room for the thermos fans pushing everything forward and the condenser wouldn't have room in front of the radiator anymore.
Or if you wanted to keep the front the way it is now then would require a firewall refresh as I have done in the ute to accommodate the extra 2 cylinders... Either way not a little job, but a lot of fun doing it! Lol
Probably a set of Caltracs on the back to get the power to the floor as well lol, I know you like it sideways...

Cheers
JB

Title: Re: Glenn_M's Van
Post by: NES304 on July 11, 2014, 03:12:47 PM
Nah what JB means is that the plugs are the same for V8 and the mounts are too... Although you may need to move his forward to negate moving the fire wall. Wafer thin thermos then!(and keep aircon!!)

Read my thread (when I went from 6 to 8) engine harness comes with engine and uses same body harness plugs as VT V6. Need an 8 computer but u buy that with the engine. Bell housing different on the box so-
Buy a complete engine box harness computer (and I'll give you the HSV tune) and the V6 conversions gearbox mount is turned backwards exactly the same as a commodore does to suit the new gearbox position.
Then I'll reprogram your instrument cluster to be on police mode with digital speedo!
Too easy.
