I saw the A55 too Colin.

A mate of mine's first car was an A50 Cambridge, that he bought in 6th year of high school (year 12 for the younger viewers ;)). It was mouse grey and we painted it light blue with a vacuum cleaner, the paint wasn't very shiny or smooth it was nice and thick ;D.

I remember driving it (slowly) up the New England Highway to Armidale. On the climb up Moombi from Tamworth, it was a close run thing to see if we could get to the top before the thing boiled. It seemed that every time you even approached a hill the temperature would start to rise in anticipation of what was coming ???

It did have electric wipers, but they were Lucas..... did you know they invented intermitent wipers?

Just think, if Joseph Lucas had invented the internal combustion engine, the motor car would probably not exist ;D

I often wonder if in 1959 people saw a new FC and went 'ho-hum there's another new Holden they are so bland compared to the old '29 model A, now they had style!!' 

I know today if I see an old Holden I'll spin around and watch it pass, but even a new SS Commodore won't even rate a second glance from me.  Maybe it's just me??

I remember as a kid in the 70s the road was full of hotted up FJs and EHs, but I still took notice of the new Kingswoods etc then (I guess because we had one!).  Chargers and 2 door Falcons always stood out to me though!

Anyway enough rambling from me!

Notation with pic says 1955, so it must have been a prototype FE ;)  Bit hard to read, but the plates are QAV for Qld Ambulance.  I want one of these QAV number plates for my collection if anyone has one hiding in a shed somewhere 8)

I haven't seen an FE bird on an FC before. I have one at home that I didn't put on Nev because I think it looks too busy with the standard propeller. However, I think it looks great on the FC, much better than the plane. Might put it on Thelma 8)

Yep Alex,
That is a nice one.  Taxi is sporting its original issue Qld number plates from 1957.  In 1961 Queensland taxi plates changed to this type pictured here, starting at T10-000.  If anyone has any pictures of old Queensland Taxi Cabs showing the number plates, please email me a copy.  They don't have to be FE or FC of course, unless you are going to post them here ;)

Hi,

I work for ACTION, Action stands for Australian Capital Territory Omnibus Network. Prior to this we were all part of the Dept of the Interior. I found this photo going through the retirees website that has just been put together.

Obviously all the usual copyright apply.

The photo was taken in 1975. This was when it changed over to ACTION from the Dept of Interior and the new logo was incorporated into the stop.

Obviously the bit of interest is the FC standard in the background.

Love the Brissie ones,everyone obviously knows where they were taken so we cant start sleuthing as to the whereabouts,shame i really like that game.

That Canberra photo will be Woden or Belconnen given the date. Can anyone zoom in on the number plate on the HJ?

We need a bus route geek to give us the route No. details.

The bus route 45 went from Civic to Latham, via the Higgins interchange before the Belconnen Interchange was built. The Route 440 traveled from the City via Hawker to the Higgins Interchange. I am trying to chase up some old timetables from the retirees to try and find out at what point these two runs intersected each other to give me an Idea as to where the photo was taken.

Look closely and you can see a 'pink' FE climbing up the hill.

A you sure the ute isn't an FE?  ;D

What is that in the distance near the other bus, another FC or a later model?

Looking at the ute, it has a short front mudguard spear which should designate it as an FC. As far as I know FE utes had a holden script in place of the spear.


Looking at the vehicle I would think that it would be an FE as the two tone does not travel down the boot as does the series 1 FC.

I am happy to be corrected... ;)

  Great find Alex, that photo of Peter Warren Motors I'm old enough to remember that place it was on the corner of Mc Quarie St & Elizabeth Drive which is now Westfields shopping centre(I think, left Sydney about 15 yrs ago)  he sold VWs in those days, a little bit smaller than his dealerships today.  Thanks Roy

This is the rarely seen result of car crashes in the 50's. The road toll was over 1000 in the late 50's because of the lack of seat belts, non collapsible columns & no crumple zones. Anyone who tells you they would rather have an accident in an old car than a new one - show them this pic.

* Before you ask, I got the new Trax catalogue in the post today, and am sure the 80s De-Luxe Taxis didn't look like the one pictured. Found a pic of a HQ ($2), but no XD. The HQ is more like I recall them, with a badge-shaped sign, which is nothing like the livery on this new Trax model. I think it has the decals lifted straight from the FC. This XE ($2) could be a De-Luxe, but too blurry to be sure.

I also turned up this, which is a fantastic photo, even if not FE/FC. It's a family owned fleet of Taxis, from Hamilton in NZ Victoria.

Nice pics RET.  Something didn't look quite right about the fleet of NZ taxis in your last picture and I then realised they are Victorian taxi plates on the cars.  After looking at the website you linked, they say the taxis are from Hamilton in Victoria, Australia which makes more sense. :-X

That pic is worth printing and placing into an old frame.....just might do that!!!

Here's one from the family archives (otherwise known as shoebox number 3).  Taken about 1971, that's me in Dad's arms with Mum and my brother.  The FE's roofrack  is loaded and ready to go.  This particular FE belonged to my Grandmother and she gave it to Mum and Dad when she bought a Volkswagen beatle which later caught on fire (I was in the back seat at the time).  I reckon Mum and Dad got the better end of the deal with the FE even though in this photo it just looks like any other 15 year old Holden. ;)

Will try and dig up some photos my grandads taxi service
he started a taxi service in Wangi Wangi NSW and had a new FX  and then updated one of his best customers was sir willam Dobell the painter who also lived and wangi and did not have a licence
But apparently his cousin loaned one of the cars and wrote it off sending the business bankrupt.

I had one of them coronas
painted flames all over it 1 owner car low miles
I remeber towing dads boat down to the local ramp just a centre console put it in and it wouldnt even pull the trailer out had to get a tow 1.3 litre 2sp auto not very nice at all.
I then stripped a cam gear so we got a complete cam and gear out of a earlly toyota truck that had the same engine and i dont know what the cam grind was but it was un drivable so we scrapped it.

I hope that one is in landfill somewhere.

Yes FCHoon, they weren't the ideal tow car.  Makes you wonder how powerful the truck would have been!

Anyway, here's another blue Holden.  Bardon, Brisbane in 1968.  Trams last ran in Brisbane in 1969.

I copied it and made it bigger but still not clear - I'll guess something like a towel used to tie a bike on the back sitting on the bumper? Maybe a big uni and you drive and park then ride to class? Just a guess....

Not just you Alex,nice wide rims on the back. Almost looks like they have taken off the overriders and moved the number plate surround
over the join. Probably years ahead of its time for a towbar to not obscure the number plate  ;)

Taken from what is now the Hay St Mall looking east with the Town Hall in the background
A bunch of around 20 Taxis without fares.... Maybe going to a Taxi Rally or on strike.
Mainly Fc's with an Fe behind the Tricolor Taxi
Date is ealy sixties as there is an XK in the foreground and an FB behind the FC wagon on the right
Also what appears to be an FB Bird on the first Taxi
UAA Plates were only used on taxis

Bondi surfer John Knobel changing a tyre on Pittwater Road in the early 1960s, photo owned by John Knobel.

If you joined John Knobel on a surfing expedition, in his gleaming 58 FC Holden, the only condition was that you helped him wash and clean it out afterwards. Here’s a photo of John and his friends, far from their Bondi homes, sorting out a puncture on the northern beaches in the early 1960s. Cars were pretty special in those days.

Thanks for sharing these they are great. Here is a pic of the same station that my FC came from. So one of these blokes was most probably the owner of my FC Taxi. Great pics from the pic guru. I appreciate the time you have taken to do this.

I have had the photos below sent to me and they come with the following story:

I have been going through many old photo's on my parents farm at
Cootamundra. Dad was working at the CSIRO at the time & travelled a fair bit for
work in the old holden wagon in the photos.
 
Please note the one of the St Kilda Flats was taken in Narooma.
 
So - they are not my family photos and its not my Dad that is being referred to, but the fellow who generously shared these with me and has given permission for them to go up on the Forum.

The first 2 are at old Charnwood Homestead ACT (now suburbia).

if you are a Facebooker there are some great old pictures in the Police Gallery ($2)

We saw a photo display in Adelaide Arcade once that had a black FE sedan police car.  I think it had  2 officers standing with it and it had a whopper of a siren hanging off the side of it. I've never seen it anywhere in their archives since - maybe it wasn't owned by SAPol though.

just spotted one of a black FE in their photo gallery called "transport" - not the same one that I'd seen but love the size of the siren on the front guard..... maybe I should look for a "period accessory" for my car  ;D

But it might clash with the foxtail...   ;) ;D

I think you are in the wrong city  ;)

I reckon that's a Melbourne Tram that has just crossed the Queens Bridge and about to travel under the Flinders St/Spencer St rail link (Spencer St now called Southern Cross.

If you google map this location cnr William st & Queensbridge st, Melbourne that it the location the photo was taken albeit 53 years later. Go into street view & rotate 180 degrees, it now looks like this:

Back in 1975 I used to work in the 2nd tallest building on the left in the 1959 picture - it was originally the headquarters for the State Electricity Commission of Victoria who I worked for until 1995 when the then Premier Jeff Kennet sold off everything he could so I lost my job as a consequence  >:(

BTW, Tram route 55 still exists and follows the same basic path it did back then:

Stop 1 at Flinders St is closest (beside the Immigration Museum) - the Immigration Museum is the cream coloured building on the left just above the train line in the 1959 picture (actually used to be Customs House until ~1970).

Love the pic Different colour  combo i havent seen done before looks as tho someone has added it.
There must have been a run of the rear chunky looking tyres i have a set here must be light industrial or something..

They were called winter treads - very common in farming areas.

I have a pair of winter treads that came on the rear wheels of the Boonah Ambulance, but unfortunatley I had to remove them due to fine cracks between the treads

Hi all
The top view is pre 1961..as the trams stopped running in Sydney in February 1961. "I believe" the location to be the top of William Street Kings X. The tram a Sydney R type car and is about to swing right to travel down throurgh Ruscutters Bay passing the Sydney Stadium (the old tin shed) on its way to Watsons Bay. Watsons Bay line finished in 1960.
What a lovely view of Sydney in the late 50s to 1960.

I believe the ICA was an additive that Shell put in their petrol to help stop pinging and valve wear.

Hi Alex.  I do not know the story behind the photo.  Recently some long lost slides were found.  I have scanned all of them but only one with an FC  in it.  I found the date stamped on the slide. It was taken at my in laws property just outside of Beenleigh not too long after I came on the scene. As far as we can work out it was a visit from some friends. Will be asking ma in law when we next see her.

I was talking to some old taxi dudes. They said that some would put custom bumpers on front to put lights on, some taxi ones were also strengthened behind the bumper. When I get to doing the rechroming of the bumper on my taxi, I wonder how much filler it will have and whether it will be brass, not that I know much about chroming.

That lion pic is a cracker.
What bright spark thought painting the car in zebra stripes would be a good idea. Missing headlight rim, dented roof, bent overriders etc. Looks like it may have been mistaken for the real thing.

  the cars that can been seen aboard the trail are on the west coast of tassy Rosebery to Burnie , as there was no road, the murchinson highway from the coast through tullah to Rosebury didnt open till 1962,  the loco pulling them is one of two Dubbs locos built in Scotland in the 1890s one can be viewed at the west coast mining museum at Zeehan, the other fully restored at the Don river rail museum at Devonport, highly recommend you visit both when you are over here ,especially the mining museum at Zeehan, allow yourself plenty of time lots to look at...........

Yes, van was owned by Justin Fletcher at the time. It had a painted grille and rather uniquely, a grille emblem with painted surround as well.

The Fairbridge (Farm) Drag Strip was an old airstrip which was mostly gravel. Club members would sweep the quarter mile for race day. At the end of the Quarter mile you held on for your life because that's where the real fun began.

Hmmm, thats an interesting wagon, at first I thought it was a FC special wagon with a stripe kit, but its not. Then I thought its a standard wagon with a stripe kit, but its not.  Its an FE special wagon with what maybe a "Dart Look" flash kit the same as Chris Boutlev's car.
It appears to be grey and white with a maroon flash.
Would have been a pretty car in its day.

Here is a picture of the first FC I owned takrn in 1965 at the parents in law house.  The house is over 100 years old as is the barn and cream shed.  All the builds are still in use and the ma in law still lives in the house.

George Street Sydney.....Note the tram lines are still there but the overhead trolly wire has been removed....trams last ran along George St in 1958....The new trams in Sydney only cross George st near china town......Remember 'Farmers'department store long gone....Great shot this!

Could be Newcastle.  A google search brings up an intersection of King and Steel Streets in Newcastle and there is still a building with 3 peaks to the frontage visible down King Street.

Alex, is the colour scheme in the "Wello" pic unique?

Hey DJ.
I wouldn't say it is unique, I have seen a few FE's with this paint treatment.
I believe this was a way that FE owners added a bit more colour.
A way of upgrading to match it with the newer FC perhaps?

Well, the cars in the foreground are not FE FC, but those behind are.
The featured car is a bit of a mystery as little is known other than it is in WA and wears a Holden badge of early 60's vintage. The other car on the stand appears to be Ross Coxson's FJ based custom (special) Anyone know anything about these cars?

I showed my father inlaw the pics.
he remebers his dad bringing home a brand new fj ute.
The same day he decided to take it for a drive he was 11 at the time he backed it into a post and bent the tailgate.  :D

That last pic is Doug Whiteford's garage, and looks like his Talbot-Lago T26C monoposto in the foreground (which he took to 8th place in the 1956 AGP).

Doug won the AGP in 1950 (Eldred Norman's Double Eight entered but DNF), 1952 (Eldred's Maserati entered but DNF) and 1953 (Eldred didn't race but McKinnon took Eldred's Maserati to 15th place).

Have a look at the way the rear springs have been shackled to lower/stiffen the rear of the car up. This must have been common practice? Lots or rust in the rear floor of that sedan.

111 sports a grille badge

VERY common practice by low-budget (read poor) racers was to just heat the rear springs with oxy to lower the car.
Also common was to take a few spring leaves out.
The softer springs helped keep both rear wheels on the ground as well, with axle tramp being a rare problem.
It was also common to heat the front springs or cut part of the coils out.
Usually we cut more out of the left, sometimes leaving the right side whole.
Very scientific, hey?

Hi All ... Remove this if off topic ( back of FE / FC only) ..but It just gos to show how different life was when our cars were young. Here we have, at Bendego a tramways truck and crew working on the tram line .....proberly welding .... using the tramway overhead, 600 V DC for power. How different life was in 1957 to 1959.    Who would had thought so many of our FEs &  FCs would still be running around well in to the 2000s.     

Back to the 224s roll over photo, the motor appears to have broken off its mounts, judging by the gear box to tail shaft angle anyway (we have to chain our engine mounts these days for that reason) and are those rear floor pans rusted out??? What year was that photo taken?

I came across these pics amongst a series of photographs taken from slides.
The pics were taken in the early 60's and show a beautiful family FC.
No names, or locations, as they were acquired from a random box of slides bought at a market stall.
I love the insight these pics give into the early 60's way of life...the car, the house, the garden the clothes etc.

Brilliant photos great to share them , shame they got left out to go to a jumble sale!! Anyway they are a fantastic snap of 60's life in the burbs in Australia reminds me of my aunties and Grandmother in the 60's in Reservoir in Melbourne always well dressed a Holden always in the drive and incredibly house proud. Notice that the first shot the lawn is freshly sown and the next one its cut short!

IMHO the photos here should have an FE or an FC in them, unless there is a specific reason why not (eg the 2 little girls in cowgirl getup)

Can have an FX FJ as well as an FE FC  ;D

Found some old slides from my dad's collection... this one's circa 1962 of my siblings and me in the family FC. It originally had a light grey flash but some time around 1961 dad resprayed the flash to maroon using the old hoover vacuum cleaner with a folded hanky as a respirator mask :o

Not sure of the location of this one but I remember the FE in front of our FC, it was a cousin's who thought he was top of the family until Dad bought his FC  ;)

Think this one is outside "shell house" in Stawell VIC mid 60's

This one is obviously later, I think around 1968-9 as dad had sold the FC to my older brother (who resprayed it to blue and white). Dad bought the ex taxi HD (hence the all black paint job) which he kept until mid 70's when he finally painted it red and white to sell it and buy a HQ 2 door Monaro LS (shame it was only the a 202). We built the caravan in dad's garage in the mid 60's and that's why dad bought the HD as the FC would not pull the new 'van.

Have some more I will post later.
