Title: Lost but not forgotten
Post by: DN2168 on August 25, 2007, 09:28:42 AM
This is the car that I should never have sold. My old '58 FC Special. One of those ones that you regret the minute it drives out the drive-way. Apparently it went to Yamba Nthrn NSW where it was painted upholstery redone & the wiring tidied up. Would love to know where she is now & how she'e going. If anyone knows please PM me.

Have found a vin no. L141968. I tried R.T.A but because of privacy they can't look anything up. If anyone has any other ideas I would like to hear them.

Thanks, Dean.

Dean, that looks more like an engine # than a vin #
The vin or chassis # would look more like FC-#####-S
Good luck with the search

Hi Dean,

Is this the one, this is a link to the ad on Trading post, it is the same colour and has the same wheels. It is in Albury

http://www.tradingpost.com.au/Automotive/Classic-Unique-Cars/Vintage-Classic-Cars/AdNumber=TP003016360?BackToResult=true&AdOnTop= ($2)

I hope that it is and that you have found the one that you have been looking for

Hi Keith,

Yes I think that this is my old car. I had a freind come around last weekend in his FC with a mate of his in his FJ. We were talking about what I intended to do with one of the shells I have in stock. Tony in the FJ said he had seen a red & white sedan in the trading post recently as that was the colour scheme I am thinking.

When they left I thought I would check out the red & white car to get an idea how mine would look when done. Lo & behold what was the first FC that should appear on the page but the one you have linked to. I called Jodie over & as I said "look it's my old car" I started to tear up :'(. She must of thought I was crazy :o. It must have tugged on a heart string though cause she let me put down a deposit on it on Sunday night. A minute after I finished talking with the owner another person rang him about it so it must be fate.

I am fairly confident that this could be my old car as it has a lot of the features that my old car had. The wheels on the front of this one are 7" & I had 6", but that is not hard for someone to change. The front bumper being FE not FC centre is another similarity. When I sold the car originaly the next owner rewired & re-upholstered it which have ben done as well as a recent paint job & engine....motor re-build.

The guy in Albury said it was purchased in Warwick QLD which is only 3 hours away from Lismore NSW which is where I was living at the time I sold it. The guy that bought it off me lived in Yamba NSW & that is only a couple of hours further away from Warwick than Lismore, so it didn't go too far until its trip down south (if it is the same car) & even if it isn't it will be as close as possible to it for me.

So here's hoping for a happy re-uniting  ;D.

Cheers,
          Dean.

Dean,

I have been comparing the photo's and you will notice that the tyres are the same, the wibroc mirror on the drivers side is the same, the venetians have been removed and Mudflaps have been added.

It would nearly have to be the same car, I think.

Good luck with it again

Hi Keith

Dean's gone away with work for the week, he's getting excited about buying it back. Must sell my HSV so he can get his old car back, then we will see how many he restores that he has downstairs or sells for someone else to restore (we have 4, at least 3 that have some potential).

Location of aerial is also the same, but that is the factory location.
Sure as hell could be the same car.
Now you can look forward to making new memories with the ol' girl.

Congratulations on the find.  Even if its not the same car its is still a very close match to what you are looking for, but Im excited for you cos I think its the one.

For about three years now i have been looking for my grandfathers HT Premier Sedan in Monza Blue with a White Roof.  Have not managed to find one yet for sale, (Found on one the Adelaide Bay to Birdwood this year but not on the market) but the hunt continues and hearing stories like this re sparks a glimmer of hope.

Keep us posted and .......................................................................

Sounds like a happy reunion. Not sure whether I could part with my FC even though it is promised to the next generation.

I made need another one to nurture just in case.

I can sympathise with you on the tearing up side.

Fingers and toes crossed for you.
Let us know how you get on.
I bought back my Grandfathers HR sedan years later after it was mistakenly sold. It certainly gives you the warm and fuzzy feeling to be reunited.

Well 24 hrs after I left Albury I have finally arrived home. 5hrs sleep comes off that total, plus all the turning around to look in paddocks at wrecks, which I put dibs on one ;D, western cars you gotta luv'em.

The FC is definately my old one, a repair on the rear parcel tray plus a different bolt in the front bumper confirmed it. So now I feel like a 21 year old (but Jodie won't let me have one ;D).

Happy days,
                 Dean.

Starter motor has died  :'(.

Luckily me ol' mate Allen came to the rescue with a replacement......is this how a rebuild starts?  ;D

Dean.

Title: Re: Lost but not forgotten
Post by: EffCee on December 24, 2009, 06:22:41 AM
Well Done Dean,

You are obviously very happy now that you have your old car back.

A rebuild for me got out of hand quite few years ago when the engine died. The engine bay was a bit messy as the battery had overcharged leaking acid. I decided to repaint the engine bay. As I got around the front end components I began removing them too, to give them a tidy up. 18 months later it was finished, it had been down to the bare shell and rebuilt.

Just fix the starter motor and drive it ;D ;D You will enjoy it more!

Keith

You must be on cloud nine right now Dean she looks great, are you coming up this way soon I've still got that brand new 2" sports system(with mounts) here you can have to go with those extractors, with the place on the market though you need to do something about soon if you want it.

Pedro, I will talk to Jodie about going on a road trip. I have finished up that way, now I am working at the Caltex servo in Casino. Jodie has until the 11th off, so it could be good to get away for a couple of days.

I will shoot you a PM when I have convinced Jode that we need a getaway. ;) ;D

Title: Re: Lost but not forgotten

I can't see what the issue here is either Dean - however, I suspect some are getting a little excited with the impending Nats and your changes have given them an opportunity to engage in a bit of light hearted sh!t stirring.  And if the old saying "never a truer word than in jest" is right then it comes back to people's own personal preferences and in this case it's your car so it's your preference that counts!

I have always believed that on a two-tone FE/FC the best combination would be an FE grille combined with an FC paint scheme and side flash - so I was very happy to see what you'd done.  :D  And, no, I'm not looking for any bling to detract from the classic and stylish simplicity of my single tone car!  :P ;D

Title: Re: Lost but not forgotten
Post by: DN2168 on January 29, 2010, 01:24:48 PM
Yes Kathi, this is something that I have thought about for a few years now & even before I had the car I started collecting the necessary bits.
I don't mind a bit of light hearted ribbing myself & entering the Nats is what spurred me on to get in & do it. It would be pretty boring if all our cars were identical. So, bring it on!! ;D

Thanks Jimmy.

I did a compression test on the car this morning & these are the results:
1= 90
2= 70
3= 80
4= 70
5= 90
6= 80
These are in lbs, what are good readings ie. what should it have? The motor is blowing a little smoke on start-up & on trailing throttle when going down hills ect. I have been told it sounds like valve stem seals & i don't want to just do them only to have to pull it apart in a months time cause we have opened another can of worms.

Thanks,
          Dean.

Dean

According to the manual.

Normal compression pressure at cranking speed, in an engine which has been fully broken in, is 115 lbs./sq. in. or better. All the cylinders should read alike to within 10 lbs./sq. in. for satisfactory engine performance.

This is word for word from the manual, while I am not an expert by any means, mine reads 115 across the board so I take it the 115 lbs. is correct. I'm sure others with more experience can fill you in about putting a bit of oil in each cylinder and testing again, if the compression goes up, it is your rings, if not it's your valves.

Regards
Mike

Dean,  when I got my car home it had poor power and was running rough so the first thing was a compression test.  All my cylinders were between 125 and 130psi.  The car is supposed to have done 50,000 miles but I have no knowledge if any work has been done to the motor.  The roughness and poor power was loose inlet manifold, no centrifugal advance on the distributor and a new faulty spark plug.
Cheers  Keith

Thanks Mike & Keith,

The car doesn't seem to be down on power too much, it's the smoke & fumy smell. Suppose if it's down on comp then it will need a freshen up.........Hmmm...... hot grey.

I just got offered 2 EJ motors for $150, also had a look at the engine no. in the parts car out the back & it is a 'B' prefix block. Next question are the 'J' blocks better than the 'B' blocks?

Thanks,

Dean

To confirm whether it is rings or not with a compression test drop a couple of squirts of oil in each cylinder as you check them and any significant increase in pressure will highlight that the rings are worn.

My old mechanic days from memory ;) ;)

Thanks Craig,
I haven't done a comp test with oil yet. I will probably just put in a spare motor I have here for the time being & once I get the other car on the road I will rebuild a motor for it.

          Dean.

Sorry Dean, I missed this post when it was posted, The J series blocks were sought after when I was racing speedway, being the last of the grey motors the cores were more central, were a younger block and therefore probably didn't have as much internal corrosion. They also had the larger welsch plugs in the block to enable the water jackets to be given a real good clean out. From memory the conrods in them were better than the earlier ones and the oil pump was better too. We also used to shim the oil pressure relief spring to get better oil pressure.

They were regularly bored to 3.250" and we fitted 12:1 pistons. The heads were also shaved 0.125" The mains bearing saddles were ground down to enable a 1 1/8th square block of steel to be fitted as main bearing saddle to help hold the crank together. The flywheels were lightened, and had a habit of working loose as they were only held on with four bolts. We used to ask a lot from the motors and they broke, regularly :-X

So in answer to your question, were the "J" block better than the "B" blocks, in my opinion yes, if you are building a performance Grey. Otherwise there wouldn't be much in it.

I would be very careful in trying to bore a "J" block to 3.250 now. Many more years have passed and there would undoubtedly be much more internal corrosion present.

Keith

Thanks Keith,

I am still tossing up whether to keep a grey in it or do a red conversion. I like the idea of nostalgia with the grey so that is still the first choice at the moment. Suppose I could paint a red motor grey ::).

Thanks for the info, if it does get a grey it will only be a mild one, small cam, twins & extractors.

Dean, it must be great to have your old car back on the road, is it India Ivory over Granite Grey? if so thats what mine was and will be although mine is the second gen. paint scheme so I have the rear 1/4 strip so it has the roof in grey and the boot in ivory(or will do). It's a great looker and those mags really set it off. I had an FE as my second car, but sadly it was hit by a truck and is now in FE/FC heaven, but at least I have one that I am able to rebuild and get back on the road at some point.

Dean,
what's that grill badge you've got on your FC ? I know you made reference to it and if i recall you made it... it looks very kool... have or can you take some pics on the design or close up to give us all FE owners ( or FE grill owners ) some ideas on what to put in the centre of our grill... as the FE grill is a little bare without a grill badge, as opposed to the nice looking FC badge, which if i'm correct wont fit on a FE Grill

but that chrome piece you have on your grill looks great

I went for a drive a few weeks ago & something has let go in the new motor. In the words of Rebel off Running on empty "She sounds like she has a wobble in the bottom end" :o. Probably why I have been a bit quiet lately...sort of lost interest, even thought about selling the lot at one stage.

149 red...small block.
Bought it off gumtree yesterday. Was done up a few years ago and not fired up. Everything on it looks new so here's hoping ;D .

Might be time to build your own if these fail.

The 186 for the taxi is going to be built here, if this one fails I will be going on an instant diet....2 stones lighter.

Red carby's have a bigger base I think Pete, I'll have a play, might need some adaptors made up.

If they are the same centres ill just cut em off and re weld them.

Or I can make a whole manifold? I have to do one for a supercharger on a 186 for a mate eaton commodore style.

Really gotta start concentrating on getting some of my own projects finished but i love doing these little ones especially when they work

Good one Dean, you haven't had much luck with the greys and red makes things go faster  ;)

Pete I just measured up the 2 manifolds & they are different lengths between where the carbies bolt onto them. Have to look at getting another adaptor made up, might try a different idea next time.

Finally got the 149 fired up today ( with oil pressure), a big thanks to Pedro & Pete for offering suggestions to help get the initial oil pressure up. Hoping to get the car back together over the weekend so it can be regoed next week.....Tassie here we come.

This may be a dumb question, but will the Gilmer system fit? There's no room up front for one in my FC (although the 202 isn't snug against the firewall, either)

Looks good Dean, but I have a few questions.
No mags?
No wipers?
And did you put the weber on the 149?
Jim

Love the trim rings, where did you get them?

Hi Jim & Alex,

Yep, no mags or wipers. I wanted to go 14" wheels with the wide whites & I had the wheels in stock. The wipers need some new bushes so I have to sort that out. No weber on the 149.....yet  ;).
Alex I got the trim rings from Armadale auto parts in WA. I tried a few places over this side & was told it would be at least a 2 week wait. Armadale had them on the shelf & 3 days later they were here.
Next I might get a set of 14's reversed to give them a little bit of dish.

Cheers & thanks,
                         Dean.

Looking real good, Deano, love the wheels/tyres/trims etc   8)

(but aren't you just a little bit concerned about colliding with low-flying aeroplanes? Could it be a tad closer to the ground in an effort to avoid flightpaths?  ;))

cheers, jack

Dean, there is bloke here in Vic (Deer Park from memory) who makes bushes for the wiper arms (I assume they are the bushes you need).  Have got his details around here somewhere, will post details here if that is a help.

completely overlooked that, looked only at the trim rings per posts below

Dean, it does look about right I reckon but then I've always been afraid to over do it - a full side shot after you do the back will be good.

I was looking at wheels too. not the relationship with the guard DOH !

I would not go much lower if its a daily driver, but that's just my opinion.
