Title: Leaky auto trans pan.
Post by: Ed on February 16, 2006, 09:41:17 PM
HI guys,

TH400.

after replacing the old trans pan gasket with a new fresh cork/rubber item and torquing up to spec the pan still leaks slowly and enough to annoy me.

i didn't use any sealant with the gasket.. was this a mistake?
I thought cork gaskets didnt any.

should I just not use a gasket altogether and use RTV etc??

I'm starting to think the pan lip has a slight bend from years of dropping oil (no sump plug).

It is not recommended to use sealant on any T350 or T400 trans pan gaskets as it can cause contamination problems. Are you sure that the shift rod seal is not leaking as the fluid usually runs down from it onto the pan gasket, giving the appearance of a pan gasket leak.
Cheers

Hi Jock,

ive had a really close look and Ive been suspicious of the shift rod as you say.  I will check it out again, but there was a leak from the opposite side of the pan as well.

the speedo drive is OK, Im also a little suss of the Detent switch too.

I torqued it up harder and it seems to have slowed it down, but nevertheless it is still there.

is it a big job to change an o-ring? round the shift rod?

much appreciated

im already planning to drop the oil out again and put on a new pan.

Cheers

Ed

Hi Ed
usually it's not too bad a job to get the shift seal out, providing its reasonable accessible. I usually use a sharpened small screwdriver and a lot of care, just push the screwdriver into the seal body and flick it out, being careful you don't scratch the housing or the shaft. Make sure you lubricate the shaft and running surface of the new seal before you fit it. I usually apply a light smear of rolls Royce gasket cement to the outside of the seal and then push it in with a long socket of the right diameter.
cheers
Jock
