Title: HR Rear end

Ok, the back brakes on my EK are siezed.

My best guestimate is I'm up for a fair wack of money to replace everything.

Say around $90 for each wheel cylinder, $30 for linings, $50 or so for drums? A couple of hours of labour? I'm probably looking at four or five hundred to get it fixed, maybe?

Would it be any cheaper to replace the rear end with a HR rear?

The other question is, could I put a HR rear end on the EK without changing the front brakes, i.e. doing the rear end first and replacing the front with a HR cross member further down the track?

Do it all at the same time Ray.
Different wheel cylinder size's will cause poor braking.

surely rear wheel cylinders are only around $20 each still.

Not FE FC ones, but HR ones still are.   You can fit the HR rear end as long as you use the rear wheel cylinders that are for a 4wdrum car not a disc/drum car.

So I could fit a HR rear end with the rear wheel cylinders from a drum/drum car, and later on when I put the HR front cross member in , just replace the rear wheel cylinders with the disc/drum type?

You will have to modify the handbrake cable / mounts to make it fit; also you will have to change the rear uni joint on your tailshaft. If possible use the HR mounting saddles and bolts to the rear springs and not your current U Bolts.
You will also have to use a combination of spring to saddle mounting rubbers, from memory the HR unit on top and an FC ute bottom rubber (it is thicker then the sedan rubber, rares have them). The ute rubbers just make it easier to get the bolts to take up, if using sedan rubber suggest getting new bolts with a slightly longer thread then the standard ones.

Is there are difference between the HR rear brake shoes on a drum/drum and a disc/drum car?   ???

The disc/drum setup has a smaller bore wheel cylinder with different ends to a drum/drum type so it looks like the brake shoes have to be changed as well.  :o

Has anyone substituted one for the other?   ???

Shoes are the same.  The wheel cylinders a\have small push rods which come out and can be changed over.

I will get new wheel cylinders and just change the ends to suit the existing shoes.  - much better then buying new shoes.  ;D ;D  

Maybe it has something to do with the self adjusting brakes?   ??? ???

It has been brought to my attention that the rear shoes are different between drum and disc front.   Please disregard my previous post and I apologise if this has sent you off on the wrong track.

yeh I found out today that the drum/disc rear shoes are different to the drum/drum rear shoes and that the pushrod is not really interchangeable on the different size slave cylinders.   :'( :'(

No worries - $25 for 2 new slave cylinders and $40 for a new set of brakes shoes and all is well.   ;D ;D

Fitted the new bits and took it for a drive and there is no rear wheel lockup which is terrific!
