Title: Paint time
Post by: Pete51 on February 01, 2006, 11:31:44 AM
Don't know if this is in the right place of the forum, but it's nearing paint time  on my 58 FC Ute and I had picked out Cape Ivory as the colour.

I did a test piece yesterday and it looks a bit light. Can someone point me towards a photo of a car painted in the colour?

It seems really light, almost off-white in my bits and pieces. I want the ute to remain standard as a replica of one of my grandad's old ones (all his photos are in black and white!)

Ok... Cape Ivory it is then. Grandma seemed to like it back then...

There's a tricky little program here -
http://www.fefcholden.org.au/techinfo/painter/Flash/fe_ute.html

That will let you paint your ute and compare the different colours, of course it is only an indication. Because of differing monitors, PCs etc, etc the colours will vary a little.

Thanks Stinky bloody marvellous.  Mum now reckons the colour could have been Maize Cream cause it looks deeper on that site than the test bit I did at home.

Looks like it's back the paint shop. Really appreciate all the help so far lads!

Pete51,

Be very careful with those paint samples.  As stinky said, there are so many variables that can affect what you see on the screen compared to what the car might look like.  Even the original paint strips from the BALM paint book have darkened with age and shouldn't be relied upon.

I recommend you get in touch with:

[box width=300]PPG Australia
Customer Service & Technical Support
13 24 24

Toll Free Fax
1800 800 819[/box]

They have all the records of early paints, and can give you the modern equivalents.  You should then be able to go to the painter and find the appropriate colour swatches to compare.

The original BALM paint numbers are:
Cape Ivory: 2158 (or 286-12158)
Maize Cream: 7467 (or 286-17467)

Hope that helps.

cheers
