Post by: les on January 20, 2006, 04:46:56 AM
We have just received the quote for the FC horn cap, they will retail for around $125.00 is this and expectable price and is there still interest in them at that price

I guess a sample would need to be seen before I said yes or no.

Hi Les,
I think, if it's on a comparable level of quality as that of the rear tail badge, $125.00 sounds like a very good price.
I guess I would also have to see the test sample after it had been left to bake in the sun for a while to see how the modern paint reacts!! But then again even the original ones faded  ::) and that is what has brought us here.........

p.s.. bugger..... does this mean the value of my NOS horn button has dropped significantly??   ;D

The manufacturer is the same one as the FC boot badge so the quality will not be a problem the problem will be selling enough we would have to believe we can sell 150-175 quickly before we proceed, the rest we will keep long term.

I'm sure it would be possible to take some sort of poll of members to gauge interest....but I don't know who would be prepared/able to put up the $20k guarantee to get things started.....

There is of course all of the potential sales to people not on the forum or the 'net.
95% of the SA Club don't get on the forum, either that or they are lurkers.

I will see if we can do a special for the forum on preorders as long as the quality is up to the mark. Rares do not normally do preorders but this may be a special case, I will try for a discount as well on preorders for forum members

Great to here from you Les
I would buy a couple at least at that price. Do you think the boot badge will sell in those quantities all at once? When will we see the boot badge ? Any chance they would make the FE bonnet insert?
Cheers,
Graham

Good on Rares for having a go at these things. ;D

However given recent debates about colours of Horn Caps and the like .. how are you going to decide / or can you enlighten us on what colour combination it is going to be ... ???

I have a prototype in my hot little hands (arrived today), and it does look very good indeed.
Hopefully we should be able to work out a deal with Rare Spares and get them on the market soon.

It's going to be hard to pick the repro from the original.
IT's put a  :) on my face and I reckon your right on the money Alex  Nos buttons are going south  ;)
Ken, any Idea on when they will be available ?

Cheers Mick

Well this is just the prototype and it will take a few months after approval until stock can be made. The boot badge took some months between prototype and availability.
Also club funding will be essential for it to fly.  We are currently looking at bankrolling the plastic seat surrounds (see my comments in that particular thread) so funding may be difficult without the support of the other clubs (apart from Vic and NSW)

just  one other thing if anyone finally work's all this out, why are some painted silver  and some painted off white on the underside too. would this affect the different finanl colour's or is it just to stop them being see through or to cover the different colours that are put on.

Different suppliers.  Most products that were sourced from other than GMH themselves were from 2 suppliers
Think Bosch and Lucas electrics
Preslite and Delco
etc etc etc

Also the reason we did them with a blue centre is because the sales brochure for both FE and FC show a blue centre in the horn button.  I know other colours do exist but you cant say that blue is the wrong colour.;D

Great to see the horn button repro. As for the NOS ones, It is drawing a long bow to compare a NOS button that has been boxed for 50 yrs with a repro. dripping wet out of the mould. The challenge of the search, as well as finally locating & fitting a NOS button is worth the doing. The decision to repro. these makes things easier & gets my applause. I located 3 NOS buttons over 25 yrs. & got great satisfaction out of fitting them. They cost me $100 each at the time,& still seem good value to me. I hope the FE bonnet inserts are next on the agenda. Keep up the good work guys.
     Cheers Old-Blu. ;)

For what looks like a quality product the price seems reasonable, if we can get a club discount all the better. I'd buy one. Derrick.

Title: Re: FC Horn Cap
Post by: mcl1959 on May 20, 2007, 05:23:37 AM
TTV, these have now gone into production and Rare Spares are awaiting the delivery of the first batch from the suplier.
As soon as we have word that they have arrived I will post here.  I hope that the quality will be as good as or maybe better than the boot badges.  While minor imperfections are hard to eradicate in this process, they are more noticeable on a horn button than on a boot badge simply because you look at it a lot more.

Will have to wait and see on that one.  Each person has to make up their own mind on what they are happy or unhappy with.

Thanks Graham.

I had already pre-ordered mine but hadn't heard anything. Will chase them up tomorrow.

It will be strange at the Nationals to see most cars with perfect horn buttons and boot badge inserts. Bit of a shame really, it was always such a rare sight to see a NOS or perfect one - now the place will be full of them!!

Picked up my horn cap today, looks nice.Does everyone else have some small lines or impressions coming down from the bottom of the letters to the top of the shield? Not overly noticeable just wondering if this is the same casting mark on all of them.Cheers,Jamie.

Post by: craiga on October 17, 2007, 08:57:07 AM
Mine has this imperfection as well, but it certainly looks 100% better than the faded and aged original one.

I wonder if the vacuum metalising used required heat and the plastic fractured because of this? My only concern is that over time the cracks will spread.

It is interesting to note that on inspection of one of my original caps,it also has some very similar marks in the same location as the new one.Don't get me wrong Craig, this is an absolute cracker compared to any of the others I have, just wanted to confirm that they are all the same.Cheers,Jamie.

Just had a look at a NOS one and no marks. IMHO they aren't a big deal anyway, but seem to be on all the repro ones.

Kev, this is true, we (namely the Vic & NSW clubs) are in the process of purchasing 50 horn caps (25 each) and the price will be about $20 cheaper than Rare Spare club price.
These will be in hot demand- for Victorian club members - see how to purchase in the Vic club section of the forum and it will also be in the next newsletter.
