My mid 59, unrestored Melbourne built sedan had a body coloured subframe.

The wagon is going to also have a body coloured subframe.

Which I think looks far better than black, which I did for the ute.

Hope this helps.

I'm stretching a 25 year memory here but my first car I had when I was 17 was an original previous one owner 37 000 mile FC special wagon (wish I still had it) and I am 99.99% sure that it had a body coloured subframe and firewall just like in fast eddies pics.

Coolaride, it depends on manufacture date. Melbourne manufacture changed through different styles starting with the release of the FC with black skirts only and finishing in Dec 1959 with all black skirts and firewall.  There was a period in the middle where no black was used at all.

dude you gotta paint the engine bay the same colour as the car.

It'll have more style then

 Hi all ;D
My mid series 59 unrestored sedan Sydney manufacture, Brisbane assembled has black subframe and body coloured firewall, Maybe different factories did it differently.

The photo that 20.4_seconds posted, below (thanks Nick),

http://www.fefcholden.org.au/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=otherimg;action=display;num=1137674891

outside Dandenong is interesting as it seems to show both the mid and late 59 styles together. The late car clearly has a white subframe. So this finish appears to be correct for Melbourne, at least up to May/June 59.

What did they do if white wasn't the primary colour, were these black?

Cheers
John

I think those Poomobiles are all mid-59 style (secondary colour on insert & boot, stainless separator at base of C pillar, between drip-rail and rear windscreen).  It's pity the photo wasn't taken 30º to the left or a foot to the right: the car in question is chopped off right at the back window...

cheers
