Title: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: craiga on November 30, 2005, 01:10:42 AM Does anyone have one of these laying around?
Were very popular in the early days, but were generally pretty robust so one of the wrecks around the place might be able to yield one of these. Or can you get them new? Any leads appreciated. Cheers, Craig. Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: TorqueFC on November 30, 2005, 01:12:24 AM they available new, and i believe are around $70 new ;)
Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: craiga on November 30, 2005, 01:15:50 AM Darcy,
Where from? Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: TorqueFC on November 30, 2005, 01:19:05 AM all exhausts places should either have them in stock, or be able to get them, as we will be fitting 4 of em to our ute ;D
regards Darcy Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: Ed on November 30, 2005, 01:54:39 AM phaark! I just binned one of these only 2 weeks ago.
Ed Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: craiga on November 30, 2005, 02:20:12 AM double pharrrk :-(
That's what I'm after, a second hand one that's no good to anyone. Like I say, surely someone has got one on a parts car? PLEASE :-) Thanks, Craig. Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: Dave_EH on November 30, 2005, 06:05:55 AM Craig - what do they do and how do they work? I know a lot of country boys used to run them on their HQ utes.
Are they different from a straight through muffler? Dave Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: craiga on November 30, 2005, 06:12:00 AM Hi Dave,
Thanks for responding. They are more of a resonator rather than a muffler, this gives a red six a nice deep tone. If you remove the muffler and just use the hot dog the exhaust note is very deep. Simple way to make your car sound good. Well better than the original method of punching a hole in the muffler with a screwdriver anyway :-) If you can dig a second hand one up it would be appreciated. Cheers, Craig. PS: Thought of you yesterday, was behind an EH with a very hot six and dual exhaust. Sounded and smelt great. Gotta love the smell of heaps of unburnt fuel at idle. ;D ;D Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: Dave_EH on November 30, 2005, 06:18:08 AM lol ;D
I'll ask around - somone has to have one. Cheers Dave Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: craiga on December 03, 2005, 12:36:30 PM Bump. :-)
Still looking to find a second hand Hot Dog resonator. Also looking for older style wooden steering wheel, similar in look to LC GTR type. Sort of like this picture (http://www.cbperformance.com/catalogimages/I-180.jpg) Prefer flat, not dished, larger size better. Something needing restoration is fine. Also boss kit to suit FC column. Thanks, Craig. Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: craiga on December 04, 2005, 07:24:54 AM Steering wheel issue solved. Went to the local Super Cheap today, free Boss kits with all new steering wheels. Bought a chrome spoked woodrim unit for $99.00, free boss kit included. Gotta be happy about that :-)
Now all I need is that bloody hot dog................ Cheers, Craig. Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: mcl1959 on December 04, 2005, 09:42:19 AM I had a ripper on a car about 15 years ago, it was about 3 feet long and gave the most amazing sound at full rev :D
The only ones I have seen since then are only about a foot - foot and a half long. Has anyone else seen these really long hot dogs? Ken Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: craiga on December 04, 2005, 10:32:36 AM Yep Ken, have the same memory ;D
Just need to get one, and size DOESN'T matter! Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: fccool59 on December 04, 2005, 10:36:09 AM have you tried Harry's cafe de wheels?
I heard they were selling variuos hotdogs. Hey craig, what are they going on, or is it a secret. I have always wanted to do a 2.5 inch copper tailpipe with a lukey sports muffler on a grey. The police have now quit trying to get people for having the copper pipes, infact they seem to no longer even know they existed. another exhaust alternative might be a Mr gasket cut out, just pull the cable when you want to be loud (for pedestrian safety offcourse) and push the cable when you want to be quite ( like if the cops are behind you) Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: craiga on December 04, 2005, 11:28:23 AM Leon,
No secrets here. The Poo Mobile is receiving a minor rework, it gets put in to the modified class everywhere it goes so I thought I might take it a little further. I got these wheels off ePay (http://tinypic.com/i4h9cl.jpg) 1970's type 'Turbo' wheels 13x7, plus a wooden steering wheel, a noisy exhaust, and maybe a little supercharger. It will also maybe get a HR front end, plus lowering blocks and new (drastically) lowered front springs. Here's what it will look like at the next Nats, if I get there ;-) (http://tinypic.com/i4h9xf.jpg) Cheers, Craig. Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: TorqueFC on December 04, 2005, 11:35:51 AM wow craig, i must say, that looks shtit hot
is that photoshopped or is that for real? as for hot dog sizes, they are still available in all lengths, and i asked our local exhaust place when we were down there, and he said every exhaust place should have them leon can you elaborate more on your 'mr gasket' idea (sounds good, but ive got no idea) Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: customFC on December 04, 2005, 12:11:52 PM Here ya go torque.
(http://www.performancecenter.com/graphics/mrg/mrg_5424_500.jpg) Craig....sounds like some cool mods. Regards Alex Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: TorqueFC on December 04, 2005, 12:33:29 PM hey alex, thanks for that. dont mean to hi-jack this thread, but where can i get one from?
Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: craiga on December 04, 2005, 12:41:25 PM Darcy,
The image is definately Photoshopped (for now), just waiting on tyres. REALLY want 235 x 50 x 13, but will have to settle for 215 x 50 x 13. It will also get some underbonnet detailing, alloy cover and sideplates, plus some other little special touches. Cheers, Craig Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: HARKO on December 04, 2005, 01:31:05 PM Hey craig it might be worth posting this thread on an american car based Aussie site .
Both my Camaro 73 and the ol boy's Mustang 69 had these on them (The real long ones) when we imported them and seemed to be standard possibly. The note on a 307 and 351 werent worth telling your mates about thats for sure. Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: nicko on December 04, 2005, 01:37:11 PM man those wheels are the best
i had a set on my EH about 7 years ago and they were very tough looking with 245T/A's on back and 205's on front.i had never seen any before or since tonight on your photoshop car. nothing like owning something no one else has especially when they look as good as your pollished set Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: TorqueFC on December 04, 2005, 01:41:43 PM i agree with harko on that, a hot dog on a v8 doesnt really give it 'that' sound, but on a holden 6, its sounds the part........ so.............
SOMEONE GET THIS MAN A HOTDOG cheers Torque Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: -KIWI- on December 04, 2005, 06:27:37 PM craig a

Thanks heaps for that. The auction finishes next Friday so I'll see if anything pops up locally first before I put you to any trouble. At least I've now got a photo of the type of thing I'm looking for:-) (http://tinypic.com/i4pfk9.jpg) Cheers, Craig. Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: craiga on December 05, 2005, 04:46:40 AM Tried to fit my new sports steering wheel today but boss kit is not quite right.
Does anyone have one they want to sell? Don't need a wheel, just the boss kit to suit standard FC column. Cheers, Craig. Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: FB_MAD on December 05, 2005, 05:08:13 AM Ken. I remember the 3 foot Hotdogs you referred to.They were painted red (most were) and were available in various inlet/outlets and straight or offset outlets and were made by "Can-Am".The picture in previous post shows where the sticker originally was in the middle of the hotdog(since burn't off).I remember buying them locally when I was an apprentice up to at least 1986 or so but havn't sighted any since.
Some blokes when fitting them would fit them backwards(they also had an exhaust flow sticker on them)and this sometimes gave a different sound than correct flow fitment.I also found that the area of exhaust they were fitted to sometimes sometimes gave a different note ie:- fitment closer to engine gave a deeper note than fitment to tailpipe which gave a more "unrefined" note......raw so to speak.I had 2x 3 foot hothogs on a 350 HQ Coupe with Genie extractors(no other muffler)and a separate twin system(no exhaust crossover pipe)back around 1987 and the sound was like nothing I've heard before. They were easy to fit, light, small compared to a muffler, lasted a long time, gave a good sound and easy on the pocket which is probably why they no longer make them!!!. Craig. Good to catch up with you on the phone last night and no, I had no idea you were inebriated at the time and no I didn't hear any of those inebriated girls giggleing in the background begging you to come back to them!!!!. I'm going to try and find a source for these as well as I'm sure that even though Can-Am no longer make them that somebody would make something similar so will let you know of my reults if any. Some so-called Turbo mufflers are really just a straight through resonator the same as the hotdogs were (even though they look like a muffler)and would probably give a similar sound but are larger in size and don't look like the old hotdogs. Will keep in touch. Terry. Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: -KIWI- on December 05, 2005, 05:17:28 AM they are still made new overhere under the brand name COBY
Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: craiga on December 05, 2005, 09:20:29 AM Thanks guys, will have a talk to the local exhaust place.
Cheers Craig. Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: TorqueFC on December 06, 2005, 01:48:48 AM when we were going through the back garage yesterday i found that we have one, but its still atached to a v8 system. are you interested?
Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: craiga on December 06, 2005, 02:48:30 AM Darcy,
Yep, definately. Could you send me a P.M with what you want for it, and maybe a picture if possible? Thanks, Craig. Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: Jonno on January 19, 2006, 11:16:44 PM OK...I know I'm WAY too late with this but saw this ad in the latest Oz street rodding issue
Jonno ;) (http://tinypic.com/m7c7ie.jpg) Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: fe hotrod on January 20, 2006, 12:31:51 AM ;)i recently took my fc down to my local exhaust shop where they fitted a brand new exhaust with a 10 inch hotdog, and it had a real sweet burble behind the old grey, but when i took it for a RWC the guy said it was too loud and way to much popping when you changed down thru the gears,so i took it back to the same guy where he fitted another one on the rear for the roady and he only charged me $60 fitted for a smaller hot dog it has made it a bit quiter :P but i plan on taking the rear one off very soon which i can use on my FE which will be running a twin system with a hot dog on each pipe, should sound kool with a worked grey and a free flowing twin, thru headers!!!!the shop i got my hotdogs from is EXHAUST BROS,in hoppers crossing ph 99746700 i dont know if they will ship them spose u will have to givem a ring!!!!cheers jamie ;)
Title: Re: Exhaust 'Hotdog' Post by: craiga on January 20, 2006, 12:48:47 AM Thanks for following this up Jamie/Jonno.
I still haven't fitted one to my car so these contacts are perfect for me. The 10" one sounds like the one to have :-) Cheers, Craig. |
